An Open Letter to All People Who Seek Justice
 
In his address on the 1972 Day for Peace, Pope Paul VI gave the simple but profound declaration that “If you want peace, work for justice.” It is a summation of the rich social teaching of our Catholic Church based upon the application of the teachings of Jesus Christ to our world of today.
 
We, the members of the Most Pure Heart of Mary Province of the Order of Carmelites, want to add our voices to the thousands who are speaking out against injustices in our world. Although the current situation was stoked by the horrible death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, we know that similar situations have occurred for many years in many places. These events, based on differences in color, creed, sexual orientation, financial status, etc., are the sad result of a system that has lost sight that each person is a creation of God as we believe from our reading of Sacred Scripture.
 
As men and women committed to “walking the footsteps of Jesus” as our Rule, the fundamental document of Carmelite Order, challenges us and under the inspiration of the Holy Prophet Elijah and Mary, we will work to promote the similarities we share as fellow pilgrims at this moment in time on Earth.
 
Our reading of Elijah in the Hebrew Scriptures calls us to work against unjust structures, to enter into dialogue with others to build a world which assures all of basic human rights, to speak to promote our commonness, and to denounce injustices wherever we find them.
 
The other inspiration for our lives as committed religious men and women is Mary, the Mother of Jesus Christ, who is seen in Scripture most often as silently contemplating events in her life in order to find the face of God. May we make the effort to adopt Mary’s stance so that we might continue to transform our own prejudices.
 
Our past experience demonstrates that the upheaval we are experiencing today in our cities and towns will diminish. But we will continue to carry the injustice with us. It will not go away but will continue to diminish us. We need to work to rid ourselves and our cultures of any prejudices and hatreds now and forever. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops says “We cannot turn a blind eye to these atrocities and yet still try to profess to respect every human life. We serve a God of love, mercy, and justice.” Christians are compelled by the teachings of Jesus Christ to do nothing less than work for justice.
 
We offer this prayer¹ for all who believe in God and ask that you pray the words with us: 
 
God of Heaven and Earth,
you created the one human family
and endowed each person with great dignity.
Aid us, we pray, in overcoming the sin of racism.
Grant us your grace in eliminating this blight
from our hearts, our communities,
our social and civil institutions.
Fill our hearts with love for you and our neighbor
so that we may work with you 
in healing our land from racial injustice.
Amen.

We offer to walk with those who have no faith in a God so that the establishment of justice will become a project in all the world and no one will be left behind or emarginated. For when someone is excluded, true peace, a genuine harmony of life, will never come.

Una Carta Abierta a Todas las Personas que Buscan Justicia
 
En su discurso en el Día de la Paz de 1972, el Papa Pablo VI hizo la declaración simple pero profunda de que "si quieres la paz, trabaja por la justicia". Es un resumen de la rica enseñanza social de nuestra Iglesia Católica basada en la aplicación de las enseñanzas de Jesucristo a nuestro mundo de hoy.
 
Nosotros, los miembros de la Provincia del Purísimo Corazón de María de la Orden Carmelita, queremos agregar nuestras voces a los miles que están hablando en contra de las injusticias en nuestro mundo. Aunque la situación actual fue avivada por la horrible muerte de George Floyd en Minneapolis, sabemos que situaciones similares han ocurrido durante muchos años en muchos lugares. Estos eventos, basados ​​en las diferencias de color, credo, orientación sexual, estado financiero, etc., son el triste resultado de un sistema que ha perdido de vista que cada persona es una creación de Dios como creemos en nuestra lectura de la Sagrada Escritura.
 
Como hombres y mujeres comprometidos a "seguir los pasos de Jesús" como nuestra Regla, el documento fundamental de la Orden Carmelita, nos desafía y bajo la inspiración del Santo Profeta Elías y María, trabajaremos para promover las similitudes que compartimos como compañeros peregrinos en este momento en el tiempo en la Tierra.
 
Nuestra lectura de Elías en las Escrituras hebreas nos llama a trabajar contra estructuras injustas, a dialogar con otros para construir un mundo que asegure todos los derechos humanos básicos, hablar para promover nuestra comunidad y denunciar injusticias donde sea que las encontremos.
 
La otra inspiración para nuestras vidas como hombres y mujeres religiosos comprometidos es María, la Madre de Jesucristo, a quien se ve en las Escrituras con mayor frecuencia como contemplando silenciosamente los eventos en su vida para encontrar el rostro de Dios. Que podamos hacer el esfuerzo de adoptar la postura de María para que podamos continuar transformando nuestros propios prejuicios.
 
Nuestra experiencia pasada demuestra que la agitación que estamos experimentando hoy en nuestras ciudades y pueblos disminuirá. Pero seguiremos llevando la injusticia con nosotros. No desaparecerá, pero continuará disminuyéndonos. Necesitamos trabajar para librarnos a nosotros mismos y a nuestras culturas de cualquier prejuicio y odio ahora y para siempre. La Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de EE. UU. Dice: "No podemos hacernos ciegos ante estas atrocidades y aun así tratar de profesar respetar cada vida humana. Servimos a un Dios de amor, misericordia y justicia ". Las enseñanzas de Jesucristo obligan a los cristianos a hacer nada menos que trabajar por la justicia.
 
Ofrecemos esta oración¹ para todos los que creen en Dios y les pedimos que recen las palabras con nosotros:
 
Dios del Cielo y la Tierra
creaste la única familia humana
y dotaste a cada persona con gran dignidad.
Ayúdanos, te rogamos, a superar el pecado del racismo.

nuestras instituciones sociales y civiles
