The Issue
Extreme Risk laws, also known as “Red Flag” laws provide a way for family members and/or law enforcement to intervene when someone is showing serious signs that they are at risk of harming themselves or someone else with a gun. Currently, these laws have been passed in 17 states and Washington, D.C.
Our Approach
Across the country, we are working to pass Extreme Risk/Red Flag laws at the state level, and to encourage Congress to pass a strong federal law. In states where these laws are already in effect, we partner with the Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund to raise awareness with the “One Thing You Can Do” campaign, which educates the public about how to use these laws to keep loved ones safe.
Red Flag laws are a powerful tool to help keep people and communities safe, while also respecting individual rights. They empower family members and/or law enforcement to work with a court to temporarily restrict someone’s access to guns when they are showing strong warning signs that they pose a threat to themselves or others. Red Flag laws can be effective in helping to prevent firearm suicides, mass shootings and other gun violence tragedies.
