Amia Tyrae Berryman Is The Seventh Transgender American Murdered This Year

Berryman was misgendered and dead-named in initial reports from her local news station.

A trans woman from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, has become the seventh transgender American murdered in 2018.

Police found the body of Amia Tyrae Berryman, 28, early Monday morning after reports of a shooting outside a motel in Wooddale East neighborhood. Berryman had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene.

Baton Rouge police are still investigating her death, and a coroner will be conducting her autopsy on March 27. There are no suspects at this time.

Initial reports from WBRZ-TV 2, Berryman's local news station, misgendered and dead-named her. As of this story's publication, WBRZ-TV 2 has yet to issue a correction.

According to her Facebook page, Berryman worked at Alliance Home Health Care.

News of her murder comes a month after the death of 46-year-old Phylicia Mitchell, a hairstylist from Cleveland. Since January, at least five other transgender women have been murdered. If anti-trans violence continues at this staggering rate, 2018 will be even more deadly than 2017, which saw record-high numbers of transgender homicides.
