SVA’s Artist Residencies offer artists, designers and creative thinkers time, space and a supportive community in which to develop ideas and focus on their artistic direction, with summer programs on campus in New York City, as well as year-round in online formats.

In addition to our time-honored studio residencies, a variety of innovative professional immersion programs provide opportunities for artists to explore new areas of social and technological practice and engage critically within their field.

A unique combination of creative and professional resources provides a rich environment for growth and opportunity in the current, vibrant art scene.

On-campus housing is available, as are opportunities to display work.

SVA's Artist Residency programs are currently providing a select number of tuition assistance awards for accepted artists in need. Please note there is a limited amount of awards available per program and applying does not guarantee an award. For further details or to apply for a tuition assistance award, contact residency@sva.edu with the subject line "Tuition Assistance Award Application." Tuition Assistance Awards are currently not available for online programs.

Work Sample Guidelines
Visual work samples (for all programs except for Design Writing)
Submit EITHER still images or video:
Still images: up to 15 JPEG images of current work (no more than 1000 pixels on the longest side) or URL. Powerpoint or PDF files will not be accepted.
Video: 5-10 videos, up to10 minutes of footage (Quicktime or URL)

Writing sample (for Design Writing only): Up to 2,000 words of published or unpublished writing (such as essays, blog posts, or articles) about art, design, architecture or related subjects (.doc or .pdf file)

International Applicants

International applicants are welcome, however, the College cannot provide you with a visa, nor assist you in obtaining one. As a general rule, international students can take a vocational or recreational course as long as it is incidental to their main purpose of visiting the U.S. Please note that SVA is not authorized to issue the Form I-20, Certificate of Eligibility for the F-1 student visa for the Division of Continuing Education. Non-matriculated students are not eligible to apply for the F-1 student visa. Further questions about visa status can be directed to the International Students Office at iso@sva.edu

Participants are expected to speak and understand English well enough to hold a meaningful conversation with faculty and other participants. A TOEFL score is not required for admission.

Refund Policy

There is a $500 cancellation fee for withdrawal in writing at least 2 weeks prior to the start of the program. There will be no refunds for withdrawals requested less than 2 weeks prior to the start of the program.

To withdraw from the program you must notify the coordinator of Artist Residency Programs, in writing, of your intention to withdraw. You may do so by emailing your withdrawal to rcohen33@sva.edu or by sending written notification via mail or fax. The Division of Continuing education is located at 209 East 23rd Street. All refunds for payments made by American Express, Discover, MasterCard, or Visa, will be credited to the appropriate credit card account. Payment made by check or money order will be refunded by check, payable to the registrant. Processing of refunds takes approximately four weeks.

The $500 program cancellation fee is non-refundable. The effective date of the withdrawal or cancellation is the date that the program coordinator receives written notification. Lack of attendance alone does not entitle a student to a refund.

Refunds, less the non-refundable program fee, are made after the prorated percentages of liability are applied. Prorated housing costs are based on the check-out date, not the official date of withdrawal or cancellation.
