NEW | "Climate Policy Is Working: Double Down on What's Succeeding Instead of Despairing Over What's Not" by Kelly Sims Gallagher for Foreign Affairs Magazine "As governments grow more committed and ambitious in reducing their emissions, and the public and private sectors more concertedly raise financing, the climate crisis need not inspire resignation or dread. Hope is not a strategy, but a strategy does exist to restrain climate change, and it is one that should give even pessimists grounds for optimism," writes Dean Gallagher. The rate of warming in the Arctic is twice that of the average global warming. Against this backdrop of melting sea ice, numerous challenges emerge that make the Arctic a global, and not merely a regional, concern. First, what implications does it have for the region's increasingly threatened biodiversity? As countries of the Arctic respond to this challenge, how can they leverage existing diplomatic and cooperation frameworks or design new ones to meet Arctic needs adequately while, at the same time, accounting for emerging security challenges the changing Arctic could pose? How can countries enhance the security of their Arctic regions? Finally, would the melting ice create a new international trade route? How feasible would it be and how would it be governed? These and many other questions are explored in this latest issue of The Fletcher Forum of World Affairs where contributing authors dive into the various aspects of the Arctic as an emerging arena in international affairs. The issue also features two commentaries calling for greater inclusivity in contemporary international affairs. The Forum is thrilled to share the digital version of our print issue Volume 48:1. We are deeply grateful to the authors for trusting us with their scholarship. Happy reading! https://lnkd.in/e8ydUwFe Thank you to our sponsors The Fletcher School at Tufts University, the Center for International Environment & Resource Policy, and the Fletcher Russia & Eurasia Program for supporting the publication of this issue.

In South Asia, air pollution causes an estimated 2 million deaths annually, with the per capita death rate from air pollution increasing by 21% in the last decade, compared to a 25% decrease in high-income countries. Professor Maulik Jagnani's research reveals the effectiveness of private defensive investments like air purifiers. Early findings show a 37% reduction in indoor pollution and a 27% increase in productivity in firms equipped with air purifiers. NEW | "Preparing for Novel Extreme Weather Events in the United States: Lessons from Disasters" by Jenna Clark, Bethany Tietjen, Amy Jaffe, Saskia Salak, and Erin Coughlan de Perez In collaboration with Climate Policy Lab and The Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, this multi-year research project delves into the current climate risk landscape in the United States. The policy brief highlights the importance of regularly reviewing and updating disaster policies to stay ahead of evolving climate risks. Communities with no recent experience of extreme weather events can benefit from proactively studying lessons from disaster-impacted communities. Check out their full findings here: https://lnkd.in/eaxUWf99
