A janitor at an Osceola County middle school is facing a felony charge after deputies say he threatened to bring a weapon to school and attack his co-workers.
Deputies say they began investigating Gilberto Colón-Vega, 55, after a teacher at Parkway Middle School reported him for making disturbing comments in her classroom.
The teacher had complained about having a dirty room. Colón-Vega seemed angry that pictures of the classroom were sent to his supervisor, according to a charging affidavit.
Deputies say Colón-Vega told the teacher that his “mind is not right” because his nephew had committed a murder-suicide in Puerto Rico and began showing the teacher pictures of the scene.
Colón-Vega then mentioned that he had a job performance review on Monday. When the teacher suggested that he bring a union representative to the meeting, Colón-Vega said he would bring a gun instead, the affidavit said.
After being told not to do something he would regret, he told the teacher, “The only thing that I will regret is that when I finish in the office, the ones I want to get work in the hallway and they will run for their lives before I can get to them,” according to the affidavit.
The teacher left the room and began having a panic attack, authorities said.
During an interview with deputies, Colón-Vega’s supervisor said that he had made similar comments, showing him a picture of the murder-suicide and saying, “This is what happens when people cross me,” according to court documents.
Deputies noted that Colón-Vega had recently bought a handgun.
He was taken to the Osceola County Jail on $5,000 bond, facing charges of making a false report concerning the use of a firearm. Court documents show deputies seized the handgun and recommended a risk protection order, which would temporarily prohibit Colón-Vega from posessing firearms, be placed against him.
