Who is most likely to follow through with a prescription for extended-release buprenorphine?

Naturalistic research on extended-release buprenorphine for opioid use disorder can provide meaningful information regarding the real-world effectiveness of this medication. Studies like these build on rigorous clinical trials showing they outperform placebo and do as well as more commonly prescribed daily buprenorphine. In an addiction medicine specialty clinic, this study compared patients who were prescribed the medication and received it versus those who were prescribed it but did not receive it.

No relationship between adverse childhood experiences and alcohol problems for those with strong social support

People with adverse childhood experiences are at increased risk of developing substance-related problems. Social support, however, may help to protect against this risk. Researchers in this study investigated how social support influences the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and substance-related problems in young adults.

Greater treatment challenges for those involved in the criminal justice system if living with co-occurring opioid use and mental health disorders

Many individuals in the criminal-legal system with an opioid use disorder also experience mental health disorders. There is a lack of evidence-based treatment for this population within jails and prisons. This study examined how co-occurring opioid use and mental health disorders impact individuals transitioning from the criminal-legal system to community-based treatment, and whether treatment helps address the added burden of a mental health disorder.

Re-wiring young minds online: Can web-based cognitive bias modification reduce social anxiety and alcohol use among young adults?

Social anxiety and alcohol use disorder are two pressing public health concerns for young adults. For some, these conditions are both present and exacerbate one another, driven by underlying cognitive biases. This pilot study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of cognitive bias modification to address co-occurring social anxiety and hazardous alcohol use in young adults.

This is your brain on recovery: A look at the brain over time during abstinence after alcohol use disorder

This study investigated how the brain recovers from alcohol use disorder during prolonged abstinence, as well as what factors might influence this process. By providing a glimpse into the brain's ability to regenerate and repair alcohol-related damage, this study offers vital clues for enhancing brain-based treatment approaches for alcohol use disorder.

“At least I’m not…”: Problem behaviors beyond substance use in recovering people attending Narcotics Anonymous

People with substance use disorders are also at risk for other problem behaviors or “process addictions”, such as gambling and compulsive spending. Even though an individual is in recovery from substance use disorder, they might develop a new pattern of behavior that can lead to unintended negative consequences. This study examined experiences with new or changing problem behaviors beyond substance use among Narcotics Anonymous attendees in recovery.
