Understanding barriers to mental health care among formerly incarcerated people

Incarceration places people at high risk for substance use disorders and mental health concerns and vice versa. Yet, formerly incarcerated people face profound barriers in access to treatment. This study seeks to understand these experiences from the perspective of formerly incarcerated individuals themselves.

Can dopamine receptors tell us who is more likely to develop an alcohol use disorder?

The effect of using risky substances, such as alcohol, on the brain’s so-called “reward system” has received considerable attention, both scientifically and in the wider public discourse, particularly in terms of what it signifies for the risk of developing a substance use disorder. This study measured receptor availability for dopamine, a neurotransmitter that is abundant throughout a part of the reward system called the ventral striatum, in people without a history of alcohol use disorder, and tested whether it predicted risk for harmful alcohol use many years later.

DO-MoST they can: Veterans' views on alcohol interventions during medical-surgical care

There is a high, and often underreported, prevalence of adults receiving medical care that also engage in hazardous alcohol use. Yet, drinking can be an important determinant of medical-surgical outcomes. This study qualitatively explored how Veterans engaged in medical-surgical care felt about discussing their alcohol use and participating in a short, patient-led intervention. Providers’ views of existing barriers to medical-surgical patients’ alcohol care were also investigated.

Impulsivity and stressful life events uniquely relate to heavy alcohol and cannabis use in at-risk youth

Adolescence is a critical period for the onset of substance use. It is important to understand why some youth engage in problematic substance use, especially youth who are most vulnerable. This study examined the unique contributions of impulsivity and stressful life events on problematic substance use among youth.

Individual, family, school, and community-level protective factors for substance among adolescents with adverse childhood experiences

Adolescents that have experienced adverse childhood experiences are more likely to use substances. Yet, adolescents are also resilient. This study sought to explore what individual, family, school, and community-level factors buffer the negative effects of adverse childhood experiences on the likelihood of substance use among adolescents.

Women seeking methamphetamine use disorder treatment experience worse psychiatric symptoms than men

Methamphetamine use disorder is a global public health issue. Women may have more difficulty recovering from substance use disorders than men. Research specifically on women with methamphetamine use disorder can inform gender-specific approaches to treatment. This study examined differences between men and women in treatment for methamphetamine use disorder.

Telehealth services have increased access to addiction care, but has everyone benefitted equally?

COVID-19 led to the rapid expansion of telehealth services for substance use disorder. While overall this has improved access to mental health services, concerns remained about possible disparities related to who has access to, and benefits from, this class of health services. This study utilized a large patient database to explore uptake of substance use disorder telehealth services at the start of COVID-19, and whether people differed in terms of their access to these services based on their individual characteristics.

Patients with alcohol use disorders embraced telemedicine during the COVID-19 pandemic

Physical distancing guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted treatment for patients globally. However, it is unknown how the pandemic impacted outpatient treatment for alcohol use disorder. This study examined outpatient alcohol use disorder treatment during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic with a particular focus on telemedicine visits.
