The University's Spirit of Inclusion articulates that we strive to create a community characterized by "mutual respect, hospitality, and warmth in which none are strangers and all may flourish." With this commitment in mind, we want to ensure all students, regardless of differences in background, identity, or views, are treated with dignity and respect and feel a strong sense of belonging at Notre Dame. 

In order to help determine whether we are meeting our aspirations, the University administers the Inclusive Campus Student Survey to assess the overall climate on campus related to diversity and inclusion. All students at all levels, both undergraduate and graduate, are asked to participate and share their experiences.

The survey instrument is developed by the Division of Student Affairs in partnership with the Office of Strategic Planning & Institutional Research (OSPIR) and in consultation with numerous students, faculty, and staff.  All individual answers are held in the strictest confidence, and survey results are not reported in a manner that can identify individuals.

2022 Survey Results

The third administration of the Inclusive Campus Student Survey was administered between  Feb. 14 and March 6, 2022. All enrolled students (12,897) were invited to participate, and the survey returned a 42% (5,388) response rate overall.

Whereas previous iterations of the Inclusive Campus Student Survey results were presented in a text-only PDF format, the 2022 results are presented through an interactive report. Users can now view the full set of data and select any results they would like to view by demographic. Additionally, users may view current data in comparison with data from past administrations of the survey along with themes that emerged from student responses to open-ended questions.

Similar to 2018, the 2020 survey results show that the Notre Dame community has many strengths, but also challenges that continue to demand the University's collective attention. While 82% of students who responded to the survey reported they feel a sense of belonging at Notre Dame, 18% of our community reported being neutral or disagreed that they feel a sense of belonging. Almost 2,200 student respondents (43%) shared they have experienced some sort of adverse treatment at Notre Dame. Similar to 2018, the most common adverse treatment was verbal interactions with fellow students, but instances ranged from offensive jokes to exclusion or isolation, and included interactions with faculty and staff.

Exploration

Throughout the 2018-2019 academic year, Vice President for Student Affairs, Erin Hoffmann Harding, along with Vice President and Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School, Laura Carlson, and Vice President and Associate Provost for Undergraduate Affairs, Rev. Hugh Page, spent substantial time discussing the survey results to explore how the Notre Dame community can be better. Initiatives included open office hours and conversations with over 30 distinct student groups, residence halls, and faculty gatherings. In addition, a number of student leaders led peer-to-peer focus groups in Spring 2019.

We always welcome more conversation about what the University can do to support the experience of all students. We will also continue to administer the Inclusive Campus Student Survey every few years to measure our progress on these efforts. We encourage students to engage with support resources, programming, and initiatives that celebrate and promote our diverse community in the Gender Relations Center, Multicultural Student Programs and Services, the Office of Student Enrichment, Campus Ministry, Sara Bea Accessibility Services, the Family Resource Center, Student Government, and in various academic, performing arts, special interest and cultural Student Organizations.
