Students and faculty can sign up now to participate in a new, virtual study abroad opportunity from SUNY

A new offering from the SUNY Center for Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) will allow students to take action on one of six selected Sustainable Development Goals, in partnership with a community based or non-governmental organization.

The SUNY COIL Global Commons program is a fully online, six-week, six-credit opportunity available to all SUNY students, which will take place this summer from July 6 – Aug. 15.

The experience will enable students to work with global organizations supporting communities in a time of pandemic. The projects you complete with these organizations will help tell their story, from their perspective, and give them materials they can use in their work, right now. Participants will gain skills in storytelling, intercultural communications and collaborative project development.

Students should click this link to express interest in the program and sign up to receive more information, including about how to participate.

There are opportunities for SUNY faculty to get involved as well. The program seeks self-nominations from faculty who are interested in creating learning materials for online learning modules.

Nominations forms need to be completed no later than Monday morning, May 18, at 10 a.m.

These materials should focus on intercultural storytelling, or involve one of the following Sustainable Development Goals:

  • #1 No Poverty
  • #3 Good Health and Well-Being
  • #5 Gender Equality
  • #10 Reduced Inequalities
  • #11 Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • #13 Climate Action

Faculty should use this link to self-nominate to develop content for a Sustainable Development Goals-focused online learning module.

In addition to content creation, faculty can also contribute to the SUNY COIL Global Commons program as facilitators and instructors of record for these courses. These facilitators will use the prepared materials and support students in their design and execution of a storytelling project. They will be instructors of record for one course, but will be required to be available to support student learning during the entire 6-week period, July 6 – August 15.

Faculty should use this link to self-nominate to serve as a facilitator for one of these courses.

The program will also include group projects that engage international and nonprofit partners. We invite faculty and staff to nominate partners from around the world who could benefit from a storytelling project conducted in partnership with SUNY students and faculty.
