Music programs at School of Rock Vienna combine one-on-one lessons with group band practices

School of Rock Vienna is happy to serve Vienna and surrounding communities in Oakton, Tysons, Fairfax, Chantilly, and McLean, Virginia with quality music lessons from real, practicing musicians. We teach everything from the classics of singing to piano playing, bass guitar, drums, and more. At School of Rock, students can perform live music and develop their skills in a supportive and encouraging learning environment. With enough practice, they may one day rise to the level of performing at one of our many local music venues such as Jammin’ Java, The Filling Station, or The Filmore, and take their place among the local greats such as Nirvana’s Dave Grohl.

Rock 101 music program in Vienna for kids and beginners
Rock 101
Ages 8-13

Rock 101 is one of School of Rock Vienna's top programs for kids and beginners. Students have one weekly group rehearsal where they learn to play classic rock songs that have been simplified for beginner musicians. Additionally, Rock 101 students in Vienna have a weekly private music lesson with an instructor who helps them learn the concepts and skills behind their performance songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our music programs for kids in Vienna are designed to get students on stage performing, with the goal of building strong musical proficiency. Younger students at School of Rock Vienna who have participated in the Rookies program can move to our Rock 101 music program once they’re ready. Additionally, students (typically ages 8 to 13-years-old) can begin Rock 101 without any prior experience. The goal of this rock program is to quickly develop a basic competence on students’ chosen instruments before moving on to our famous Performance Program.

The Performance Program at School of Rock Vienna is our hallmark music program, where tens of thousands of students enroll each year. It consists of a weekly group rehearsal where kids and teens learn by playing rock music's most iconic songs with a band composed of their peers. Students are assigned songs and parts that are tailored to them based on their age, experience and ability to learn new skills and concepts. Students then work through their parts in weekly private music lessons, refining the skills and concepts that those songs introduce. The goal of this curriculum is to prepare kids and teens for live performances. Every few months, School of Rock Vienna Performance Program students take the stage and play at local Vienna music venues in front of a live audience.

The Path to Take the Stage

School of Rock Vienna's music programs for kids and teens are designed to inspire by getting students on stage and performing. All of our other music education programs focus on readying students for our famous Performance Program. This is where students develop incredible musical skills. Performance Program students have often gone through our Rock 101 program first or have some previous basic music experience. These young musicians will have custom development plans outlined by their instructors with key concepts reinforced during private lessons and group rehearsals, all with the goal of performing live at a Vienna music venue.

Rookies
Ages 6-7

At School of Rock Vienna, our music program for children with no previous musical experience (typically ages 6 to 7-years-old) is called Rookies. Rookies students have one weekly group music lesson where they learn fundamentals like chords, rhythm and song structure. Kids get to learn and experiment with multiple instruments so they can later decide which one they ultimately want to continue pursuing in Rock 101.

The Path to Take the Stage

All of our music programs are designed to inspire students to learn and develop a strong musical proficiency. At School of Rock Vienna, younger students who are not ready for a more comprehensive program like Rock 101 can start in Rookies. Additionally, students who have completed the Little Wing program will progress into the Rookies music program. No prior musical experience is needed for Rookies. Once your child is ready for private music lessons (typically older than first or second graders), they will graduate into our Rock 101 program.

Songwriting
Age 12 and over

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens teaches the fundamentals of songwriting, arrangement and music theory, and helps students compose original works.  At School of Rock Vienna, songwriting students receive one weekly private lesson where they learn concepts, technique and theory on an instrument of their choice. These principles are then applied in a weekly group lesson where students work together on songwriting exercises and lyrical workshops.  Every few months, Songwriting students take the stage to perform or band together to record their original songs.

The Path to Take the Stage

Our Songwriting program for kids and teens in Vienna is designed to create musical proficiency through the creation of original music. Students at School of Rock Vienna who have completed our Rock 101 program can move to our Songwriting program once they’re ready. Additionally, new students who have prior experience with and basic knowledge of an instrument can also begin Songwriting. The program culminates with a live showcase where students perform their original compositions in bands at a local music venue. Students taking the Songwriting Program online will remotely record their original songs to produce a demo of the class's music.

At School of Rock Vienna, our students can take online, one-on-one music instruction from the comfort of their homes. We call this program School of Rock Remote. This online music program contains weekly one-on-one instruction conducted by our expert School of Rock instructors in a safe virtual lesson room.
 
Students will receive their training using our proprietary education program, The School of Rock Method™, which couples live video lessons with our proprietary Method App™, SongFirst Approach™ and Method Books™.

School of Rock’s online music lesson program is no exception. Online guitar lessons, online piano lessons, online drum lessons, online singing lessons and online bass guitar lessons are all offered through the School of Rock Remote online program.

Adult Program
Ages 18+

School of Rock Vienna's Adult Program is for students over 18 years old who are looking to either improve their musical proficiency or pick up an instrument with no prior musical experience. As with most School of Rock music programs, the Adult Program uses a performance-based music education approach. This means the curriculum focuses on learning music concepts and applying them in a live performance setting. Our Adult Music Program includes one weekly private music lesson and a weekly group rehearsal. Every student at School of Rock Vienna is placed in a band of fellow adults and then assigned specific songs as a way of learning key music concepts and skills. Adult students then take the stage to play at a live show in Vienna.

The School of Rock Vienna Adult Program is open to all experience levels and each student will follow a customized learning plan developed by their instructor. Adult students will work together during rehearsal to prepare for a live performance at a real rock venue in Vienna.

Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock Vienna House Band music program gives students under 18 the opportunity to join a gigging band composed of fellow musicians from their school. These students perform additional live shows throughout the year. All students in the Performance Program have the opportunity to audition for a spot in School of Rock Vienna's House Band. Once selected, House Band members become leaders in their School of Rock community and perform live shows at VA rock venues throughout the year.

The Path to Take the Stage

Performance is the core of School of Rock's educational approach. Therefore, we create additional opportunities for students to perform on stages throughout Vienna and the rest of VA. The House Band music program allows each school's most talented students the opportunity to join a band and play routinely in front of live audiences. Once a member, students will gain real music experience associated with gigging musicians and will become leaders and mentors inside the School of Rock community.

Age 17 and Under

The School of Rock AllStars Tour takes the very best students from around the world and sends them on a nationwide summer tour across the United States. Less than 1% of School of Rock students are selected each year to represent School of Rock as an AllStar. All Performance Program students are eligible to audition for this prestigious program. The intensive audition process starts off with video submissions followed by live auditions. Once selected, AllStar students will have an authentic touring experience including traveling on a tour bus, doing tour publicity and starring in nightly performances at famous venues and festivals during a two-week tour.

The Path to Take the Stage

Becoming an AllStar is the highest level of achievement for a School of Rock student. They play on legendary stages large and small, including The Knitting Factory, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, The Troubadour and Lollapalooza. AllStar students often go on to have accomplished careers in the music industry. Former AllStars have gone on to become touring artists, star in Broadway musicals, get signed to record deals, become finalists on talent competitions like "The Voice" and "American Idol" and have other notable roles in the music industry.

Beginner Keyboard Lessons for Kids

At School of Rock we teach differently than other music schools in Vienna. Our curriculum is performance-based, meaning that we prepare students to perform. Our piano lessons for beginners combine weekly private instruction with weekly band rehearsals. At School of Rock Vienna, our beginner keyboard lessons for kids take key concepts and music fundamentals—finger placement, scales, key differentiation and more—and teach them through popular rock songs. General Manager Brian
Brian
General Manager
Brian Highsmith is the General Manager of the School of Rock in Vienna, VA, where he handles the day-to-day operations of this busy space. Brian is a DC area native and began playing drums at age 11. His first drum set was actually a stack of Encyclopedia Britannica volumes!

Brian has performed in various orchestras, jazz ensembles, marching bands, and competitive drum corps throughout high school and college. He has also toured and recorded with several original rock bands and currently plays with several local acts on the weekends. He attributes his life's successes, confidence, and many friendships to his study and love of music.

Dante Dalton started playing guitar in 2002 at the age of 15. It wasn't long before he was performing with various bands around the MD/DC/VA area. In 2011, he traveled to Hollywood, CA to attend Musician Institute's GIT program. While there he was taught by some of the top touring and studio musicians in Los Angeles. Trained in many different styles of music, he is an accomplished session player and IMDb-credited film composer. Currently he tours with critically acclaimed DC metal act Gloom.

Assistant Music Director
Logan is a drummer born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. He has been a part of multiple musical projects in both Arizona and Utah since he was 12 and has toured all over the West Coast of the United States, picking up skills and styles from many different drummers in different genres along the way.

Logan has taught private lessons for many years centered around the drummer's ability to be the most creative aspect of any band. He continues to do so on the East Coast through the amazing program at School of Rock, having moved to Washington, DC at the end of 2021 to pursue other musical projects in the area.

Grace has her Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Goucher College in Baltimore, MD. She was a former Curator at Silber Art Gallery as well as an ESOL Teacher in Italy.

Grace brings extensive front desk and customer service experience, along with her love of the arts, music, and education!

Alex is a jazz/fusion guitarist, bassist, and arranger from the New York Metropolitan area. They have a Bachelor of Jazz Studies from Montclair State University. Alex has been teaching guitar, bass, and music theory for the last eight years. While in the New York area, they were in the house band for numerous Jazz and Bebop Jam sessions as well as playing at Rock and Blues clubs like Crossroads in Garwood and the George Street Ale House in New Brunswick.

Anton is a recent graduate of UMD College Park, where he earned a Bachelor of Music in voice performance and studied under Gran Wilson. He grew up performing in school choirs, orchestras, and theatre productions. During his time at UMD, Anton was the music director of Ethnobeat, a multilingual, multicultural a cappella group. He was also the music director of two musical theatre productions (Heathers: the Musical and A Chorus Line) for 32 Bars, a student-run musical theatre group. Anton hopes to combine his classical training with his love of various musical genres to help students build healthy vocal techniques.

Beckett is a former School of Rock student who performed with his school's House Band and was selected to the School of Rock AllStars program. He began playing music when he was 8 years old learning how to play classical piano, but quickly learned how to play bass, guitar, and drums when he enrolled at School of Rock at the age of 12.

Beckett has performed in well-known venues such as Whisky a Go Go, House of Blues Anaheim, Jammin’ Java, Union Stage, and Baltimore Soundstage. Because of this he has learned extensively about how to excel at any given instrument and is excited to share his knowledge of all genres within music.

Elvis discovered his passion for music at 14 years old when his aunt gifted him his first guitar. Dedicating himself to mastering various playing styles, he developed a distinctive musical identity.

Elvis grew up in a household immersed in Latin, hip-hop, rock, and metal music, and cultivated an eclectic musical palette. Today, as a singer-songwriter, he seamlessly blends diverse influences into his original compositions.
Keyboard + Piano Teacher JennaRose Sexton

Keyboard + Piano Teacher
JennaRose Sexton started music lessons at a young age, learning several different instruments including recorder and dulcimer. After finishing classes with those instruments, she continued to learn piano for about 10 years and participated in several competitions throughout the years. She continued her musical education own her, learning several other instruments, including fiddle, bass, guitar, and mandolin. She played for a couple of bands with fiddle.

JennaRose comes to us from Nebraska where she was playing music and giving kids lessons with horses. She moved here to be with her husband and knew she had to continue teaching. A multi-instrumentalist, she will primarily be teaching keys at School of Rock in Vienna.
Johnnie

Johnnie began his study of classical music at age seven. He eventually became a piano student at American University at age 14 and upon finishing high school at Duke Ellington School for the Arts Johnnie studied piano, theory and voice at Peabody Conservatory of Music. His training in keyboards originated at the Georgetown Theatre company with courses of the basics of synthesis and programming of Moog synthesizers.

Johnie's began his professional experience as a session pianist/keyboardist musician for Malaco Studios, laying down keyboard tracks for various recording artists. He then began playing keyboards for and writing for recording group Natural High. Later on he toured with blues artist ZZ Hill and R&B artist Johnny Taylor. Upon completion of tours, Johnnie put together the funk/rock/prince tribute band Starz based out of the Gulf Coast. They released a local area hit called "My Secret World" and had the opportunity to open for The Deele, Bar Kays and Mothers Finest. Upon relocating to the DC area, he performed as a solo, duo and trio, as well as various cover bands in the area such as Clay Hunt, N2N, Framewerk, Jerx and his own band Flipside. Currently Johnnie is a hired gun for various cover bands in the area in a variety of styles such as rock, big band, funk, dance, top 40 and as household keyboardist for the Spirit of Washington Cruise line.

A serious player since the age of 12, Jordan has never ceased to explore the possibilities in music. As a multi-instrumentalist and producer, Jordan’s musical journey began to blossom with a guitar into the worlds of rock and jazz, playing with childhood friends, to being in the Charles Herbert Flowers High School jazz ensemble.

As a leading artist, band member, and sideman Jordan has played at the Rock and Roll Hotel, DC9, and The Filmore with acts such as Tylisha Haskins, Jeaxsmeaux, Chibuguzo, and others. He continues to explore new possibilities and mediums to express himself and help others find them as well through teaching.

LaRohn Kemp was excited about music and eager to perform when he was given his first drum set at the young age of six. He learned to read music and play early on and his passion for drumming really began to flourish in high school. He was a section leader in the band in his junior and senior years. At Virginia State University he was on the drum line, eventually starting up a quad section due to his own initiative.

In the early 90’s, LaRohn had the pleasure of opening for R & B artist, Michel’le, Hip Hop artist, Just Ice, and Rap Artists, Curtis Blow and Public Enemy. Then, a few years after college, he was a founding member and drummer of a Reggae band appropriately named United Souls Band. While with United Souls Band, LaRohn was discovered to have multiple musical talents and in addition to drumming, transitioned to lead vocals. LaRohn’s success with United Souls spanned 22 years through his retirement in December 2013.

Over those 22 years, the band was exceptional enough to open on national stages with an impressive number of renowned reggae artists. ​​Neel Kaloji​ is a drummer, guitarist, and producer who currently resides in Arlington, Virginia. His journey in music began at the age of 6 when he took up the drums and promptly began guitar lessons as well at the age of 7. He is an experienced musician who has played in his school jazz band, as well as multiple bands outside of school, and is currently gaining experience in music production and audio engineering.

Neel believes the early stages of learning an instrument is the most influential period for a musician to develop their love for their instrument. He attributes a significant amount of his inspiration to the incredible teachers who established such a positive and energetic learning experience at a young age. Because of this, he is an eager and enthusiastic teacher who wants to connect with his students and further inspire their love for listening and playing music.

Patrick has over two decades of experience teaching guitar and bass guitar, and over 30 years of experience as a performer, songwriter, and recording artist. His focus is on locating the musical aspirations of students and working toward their individual goals.

Patrick integrates topics such as ear training and the fundamentals of harmony and rhythm into lessons at a pace that works for the student.

Scott was born and raised in Southern Maryland and began playing drums when he was 8. He started playing local gigs at age 13 and was reimbursed for his services with burgers and sodas. Once he got a taste of playing his instrument in a band setting and experienced the joy it could bring, he never looked back.

Scott has over 30 years of extensive live band and studio experience. The church has been a key part of Scott’s musical development and he currently plays in his church band. He has collaborated and performed with countless musicians, both locally and nationally.

Scott is a U.S. Army Veteran. His service abroad gave him a unique perspective on music, witnessing the universal language, and power of music to bring people together regardless of any ethnic or social barrier. As a School of Rock instructor, Scott hopes to help his students tap into their creativity.

Tommy has been involved in music since he was 5 years old and started creating his own music after initially teaching himself to play guitar at 13. After starting a band (APEX) seven years ago and performing, Tommy started teaching private vocal and guitar lessons to people of all ages and catered to his students' favorite genres. Having a variety of genres to learn for teaching really broadened his ability to understand music and the messages that are trying to be relayed. Tommy is a guitar instructor and vocal instructor at School of Rock Silver Spring.

Will Glover, a seasoned guitarist and former School of Rock Vienna standout, is a dynamic musician with a penchant for progressive rock, progressive metal, blues, and jazz. Transitioning from baritone to guitar at age 12 and later adding bass to his repertoire, Will's diverse musical journey has spanned six years of live performances across premier Washington venues like The Fillmore.

A product of School of Rock and the Fairfax HS Academy Music & Computer Technology program, Will brings a rich background to his role as a guitar and bass teacher. His expertise and passion create an inspiring environment for beginners to advanced guitar students.

Regional Music Director
As Music Director, Travis is in charge of all student programs, lessons, live performances, and both student and teacher development here in Vienna. Using his skills as a multi-instrumentalist and experienced teacher, Travis strives to build our students' confidence not just in music but in their every day lives. He holds degrees in both Entertainment Business and Recording Arts from Full Sail University (Orlando, FL). Travis's experiences and endless desire to become a better musician allows him to dig deep to bring a high level of energy and fun to all our lessons and groups at School of Rock.

Travis's journey through music started on the piano at age three, and by nine he had moved on to teaching himself guitar while taking private drum lessons from Bill Richards (Section Leader for The United States Army Band). Throughout high school, Travis marched in the snare line as well as sitting in on various instruments with his friend's bands as much as possible. He has since written, performed and recorded with a number of artists and has held various positions within indie record labels, radio, booking agencies and studios around the US.
