#NPHawks Classics: SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Upsets No. 14 SUNY Cortland in Double OT Shootout in 2013 SUNYAC Championship

4/5/2020 12:08:00 PM

The State University of New York at New Paltz is taking a look back at some of the best games of the last two decades, starting with the 2013 Hawks field hockey team's thrilling double overtime, shoot out upset victory over then No. 14 SUNY Cortland to claim the program's second straight conference title.

No. 2 seeded SUNY New Paltz ended an 11-game winning streak for the top seeded Red Dragons on their home turf after coming back from a 4-2 deficit with less than 17 minutes remaining in regulation. Lauren Link got the Hawks within one with about six minutes to go, while tournament MVP Kayla McKeveny scored the game-tying goal with about three minutes left in the second half to force extra time.

The two teams played 30 minutes of scoreless overtime with SUNY New Paltz goalie Antonija Pjetri making seven saves in the extended period, which led to a shoot out. After each team made two of five attempts to open up the shoot out, the game went into a sudden death victory shoot out. Each team made the first and missed their second and third attempts, before Dani Ackerman had the opportunity to win it for the Hawks after Cortland's Brittany Murphy missed on the Red Dragons fourth attempt. Ackerman dribbled left and cut back right, getting Cortland goalie Chelsea Palma to dive out in front, but Ackerman regained controlled and fired a shot into the open cage for the goal.

The win gave SUNY New Paltz an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament where they defeated No. 9 William Smith College, 5-2 in the first round before falling to eventual national champion No. 5 Bowdoin College.
