Rep. Angie Craig Introduces MCCARTHY Shutdown Act to Stop Member Pay During a Government Shutdown

September 20, 2023

Under current law, Members receive regular paychecks while thousands of federal employees are furloughed without pay

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Angie Craig introduced the My Constituents Cannot Afford Rebellious Tantrums, Handle Your (MCCARTHY) Shutdown Act to withhold pay for Members of Congress in the case of a federal government shutdown.

Under current law, Members receive regular paychecks during government shutdowns while thousands of federal employees are furloughed without pay.

During the 2018-19 government shutdown, more than 800,000 federal employees were furloughed without pay, including 6,000 in Minnesota.

“Speaker McCarthy and House Republicans are ready to shut down the federal government and put the livelihoods of working families at risk – while still collecting a paycheck. Today, I’m introducing legislation to block Member pay during a McCarthy shutdown, because it’s ridiculous that we still get paid while folks like TSA workers are asked to work without a paycheck,” said Rep. Craig.

Rep. Craig continues to encourage Republican leadership to stop placating its most extreme in the Freedom Caucus and bring forward a proposal that can get support from Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate and avoid a shutdown altogether.
