Auburndale, Fla. – Stockton University (6-7) snapped a 3-3 tie with six runs in the last two innings for a 9-3 victory over Utica University (N.Y.) (4-8) that was the second win in a row for the Ospreys.
Nick Avagnano (Paramus/Paramus) led Stockton with his first career four-hit game.
Avagnano went 4-5 with a double, two runs and two RBI.
Cooper Fiore (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) was 2-4 with a triple, run and RBI.
Jordan Nitti contributed two hits, three runs and an RBI while
Max Kaplan (Wall/Wall) notched two hits and two RBI.
Stockton jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the third inning. Fiore ripped an RBI triple and later scored an unearned run. Avagnano then stroked an RBI single that brought Nitti home. Utica scored once in the bottom of the third and twice in the fifth frame to tie the game 3-3.
The Ospreys took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the eighth. An RBI double by Avagnano scored Nitti with the go-ahead run. Next batter
Austin Beard (Toms River/TR South) slugged his first career home run to make it 6-3.
In the top of the ninth, an RBI single by Nitti and a two-run single by Kaplan capped the 9-3 triumph. Starting pitcher
Rob Jeans (Toms River/TR North) earned his first win of the season with a strong outing. All three runs against Jeans were unearned, and he struck out six while scattering seven hits in seven innings.
Kyle Cipolla (Westwood/Westwood) came out of the bullpen with Stockton leading 6-3 and pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and fanning one batter, for his first save of the year. Cipolla faced the minimum of six hitters in his two innings of work.
DaShawn Hutchinson and Tanner Warren combined for half of Utica's eight hits with two safeties apiece. Joe Crossley had a two-run double for the Pioneers.
Stockton will play its penultimate game in Florida tomorrow morning when the Ospreys face Cornell College (Iowa) at 9:45 a.m.
