The decision to stop Monday’s print edition does not mean news will stop. In fact, readers will see a more concerted investment in newsrooms across Forum Communications Company. And, a highly anticipated new website will also be on display in the near future.

Decisions like these are never easy. Online shopping and I-94 have a real impact on the retail sector of our community. Those retailers are our advertisers. Newsprint prices are also on the rise. These scenarios affect all local media.

This is not whining, it's just a fact. Personally, I wish we could have the downtown Crazy Days back with its numerous businesses lining the streets. Thank goodness for Gun and Reel Sports for keeping it going on its end of the block.

Most of my life has somehow been involved with the newspaper industry. As a kid growing up, I recall going to The Jamestown Sun on a Saturday afternoon. Charlie Kourajian made the call to the Elks Club and roughly 30 minutes later mounds of Styrofoam containers arrived containing burgers with a large dill pickle spear.

Jamestown Sun work tables were filled with individuals putting pages together with a roller and a waxing machine. Typesetters were busily typing away news and ad content. Don Eberhardt and Darrell Schelske shot photos and lugged around large cameras.

The mailroom had 10 to 15 employees waiting for the paper to get off the press. The smell of ink permeated the building. Close to 60 employees worked tirelessly to bring the news to your doorstep by 4 p.m. that afternoon.

Throughout the decades, the people, cameras, presses and even the mailroom configuration have changed in our building. Today, we bring you the news in a 24-hour format with the printed product delivered by 7 a.m.

The local newspaper is so critical to the community. Its responsibility is to be the watchdog and showcase happenings of our city and region. The Jamestown Sun reports, informs, empowers and connects readers. We plan to continue to connect you with the community. Monday’s news will still be covered. It will be delivered to your inbox by 7 a.m. and include USA Today pages. The print edition will continue to arrive to your doorstep by 7 a.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Subscription rates stay the same. If you are a subscriber and are not yet signed up to receive the electronic edition delivered to your email inbox, please let us know.
