SUNY New Paltz Athletics, Wellness and Recreation Announces Fall 2020 Facilities Opening Plan

9/21/2020 1:52:00 PM

*story updated as of Sept. 21

New Paltz, NY – The SUNY New Paltz Department of Athletics, Wellness & Recreation announced the reopening of the Athletic & Wellness Center, Elting Gym and Elting Pool, for student-use only, effective Friday, Aug. 28, at 9 a.m.

For health and safety concerns, some cardio and weight training equipment were moved into Elting Gym to create more space to allow social distancing for students. To meet reopening plan guidelines both the East and West Curves and Elting Gym will be limited to 15 people per area. Students will be permitted to workout only in the facility they preregistered for. Students will not be allowed to bounce in between different areas of the gym. Masks must also be worn at all times.

As stated on page 49 of the College's re-opening plan: "The Athletics and Wellness Center and Elting Gym will be open for recreational activities for students only each day for different periods of time."

For students to use the fitness centers, they must preregister for an hour time slot through IM Leagues (time slots are listed below) and must pass a mandatory health screening through their respective my.newpaltz.edu account. All students are required to bring their student ID card to enter the facility and if they do not meet the requirements to use the fitness center's they will be asked to complete both requirements outside before re-entering the gym.

Students will be required to create an IM Leagues account, if they have not already, in order to sign up for time slots to use the respective areas of the gym. For instruction on creating an IM Leagues account see below.

Locker rooms will be closed for use, but restrooms outside of the Hawk Center and Elting Gym will be open for students. Cubbies will also be offline, so students must be ready to workout in their proper apparel. Individual water fountains are also prohibited, but there will be touchless refill stations open to re-fill personal water bottles.

The AWC and Elting Gym will open Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Recreation areas will close at different times throughout the day to allow for deep cleaning of all the equipment.

Elting Pool will also be open to students only. Six lanes will be available with a restriction to only two people per lane for an hour at a time. Each student will have a designated spot to place their items before entering the pool. Students are asked to come ready to swim, as the locker rooms off the pool will be available only after students are done with their allotted time slot. Like the use of the fitness centers, all students are required to preregister for their time slot through IM Leagues and enter through the front of the AWC using their ID Card.

SUNY New Paltz will offer a bevy of Wellness and Recreation offerings throughout the semester, including an updated Group Exercise schedule. To view the most up to date Group EX schedule, click here.

On the intramural side, there will be individual league offers in Tennis Singles, Pickleball Singles and Foot Golf, which will be held on campus. Leagues will run a five-week season with times based on the schedules provided by the respective students interested in participating. Assistant Wellness & Recreation Director Kevin Makarewicz will run all events and will review rules and provide all equipment at scheduled matches. Makarewicz will also oversee the fall's ESports league with offerings of FIFA '20 (Xbox 1 and PlayStation 4), Madden '20 (Xbox 1 and PS4), NBA 2K (Xbox 1 & PS4), NHL '20 (Xbox 1 & PS4), Rocket League 2v2 and 3v3, Fortnite Duos and Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

SUNY New Paltz will host week-long tournaments allowing students to participate in a Home Run Derby (Sept. 21-24) located on Mary Gray Deanne Softball field, Corn Hole (Oct. 19-22) outside of the AWC or in the Hawk Center (pending on weather), and Giant Connect Four (Nov. 16-19). Students can participate either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday for each respective tournament with the best score of each evening going through to a championship single elimination round bracket held Thursday for a chance to win an intramural championship t-shirt. Tentative signups for time slots will be available on IM Leagues.

Additionally, there will be virtual monthly challenges hosted by the Wellness & Recreation department. Through September there will be a Fitness Kickoff Campaign, allowing students to direct message or tag @npwellrec a photo of them sporting New Paltz Hawks apparel. All participants will be added to a drawing for a chance to win an intramural t-shirt. In October, the department plans to host a virtual "Trick Shot Challenge" for breast cancer awareness month. All participants are asked to wear pink during the filming of their shot before submitting. Participants then will compete in a bracket styled fan poll to determine who the winner will be of a coveted intramural championship t-shirt. In November, Wellness & Recreation will host a "Virtual Progression Race 1 to 10K," which allows students to submit a photo of their workout by using any fitness app to track their distance with the goal of improving the distance they walk, jog, run or crawl each month with a prize awarded for completed participants at the end of the month.
