Syracuse, NY – The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announced Monday afternoon the cancelation of all winter sports contests, which includes men's and women's basketball and men's and women's swimming.
The decision was made by the SUNYAC Presidents in consultation with the SUNYAC Board of Directors, which is composed of the 10 directors of athletics from each member institution, a week after an announcement was released about an eight-game conference basketball schedule from the SUNYAC.
As stated in the conference's press release, "The SUNYAC will continue internal planning for the possibility of spring sports. The decision on spring sports will be made at a future date."
Men's Volleyball, which typically begins its season in January, is a part of the United Volleyball Conference (UVC), and a decision on the 2021 season will be made and shared in the near future.
Additionally, SUNY New Paltz Interim Director of Athletics, Wellness and Recreation
Matt Giufre sent out a letter to all the winter student-athletes Monday, which read:
"Today is an emotional day. While your health and safety, and that of our staff and campus community is of the utmost importance and drives all decisions, the cancelation of the winter sport's season is difficult to accept. Unfortunately, the risks associated with COVID-19 have not gone away. As a result, competing this winter is just not feasible.
I know this announcement impacts your New Paltz experience. When I accepted the opportunity to become the Interim AD, I looked forward to seeing all of you involved in the sport you love. Please know our staff and I are determined to provide an engaging and meaningful athletic experience to you despite a lack of competition. Coaches will continue your small group training sessions and support you academically and personally during this difficult time. We will continue our daily efforts to serve you, our students.
There is nothing I can say that will lessen the sting of a lost season. What I am certain of, is our Hawks Family will get through this together."
