Last month, President Davis shared our University’s vision for a new Core Curriculum that provides every Longhorn undergraduate with a strong foundation and common learning experience. The new Core, developed by our faculty and supported by our Board of Regents, will offer a focused, balanced, and rigorous program of study with classes in the arts and humanities, social sciences, and STEM. Implementing it over the next two years will be an ambitious task. That work begins this semester.
We will begin the process of inviting faculty to develop courses that qualify for the new Core. And this week, because the next course catalog must be finalized on October 1, we will also begin the process of removing courses from the current core curriculum that are no longer eligible. This process will occur in stages to avoid disruptions or obstacles that our current students face to their graduation timeline. That means removing core-designated classes incrementally, though those classes will remain available as elective and major-specific courses. We will also continue building the academic infrastructure to support the new Core.
In the months ahead, we will work with colleges, schools, departments, and faculty to move this process forward until the Core is fully implemented. We will continue to update the Core Curriculum website so it can serve as a central source of information. We are looking forward to our goal of offering courses in the new Core beginning in Fall 2027, followed by full implementation in Fall 2028.
