Individual Counseling

Individual counseling is an opportunity to improve mental health in a confidential, caring space.

UHS Mental Health Services utilizes a brief care model. If long-term, more frequent, or specialized counseling is needed, UHS can help you find a provider in your local community.

Sessions typically last 50 minutes, and counselors work with students to address emotional, psychological, interpersonal, academic, and other concerns. We are committed to matching you with a provider who will be a good fit, which includes the opportunity to request a counselor with specific identities, language proficiency, or areas of expertise.  Some departments have embedded UHS mental health providers available; check with your department or call UHS Mental Health Services to inquire. If you think that your counselor is not a good match for you, we encourage you to discuss your concerns directly with your provider or call UHS to further discuss your needs.

Single Session
If you have a time-limited concern and want support processing or problem solving, or if you are unfamiliar with counseling and want to experience it before considering ongoing counseling.

Ongoing Counseling
You will meet with the same provider for multiple appointments to discuss ongoing concerns or to engage in identity exploration. If further support is needed, the provider will work with you to coordinate another care plan.

Uwill
Uwill is a UHS Mental Health Services partner that provides brief  virtual counseling. You may sign up and schedule on you own. Uwill offers evening and weekend hours with appointments generally available within a week. There is no additional cost for Uwill.

Individual counseling is an opportunity to improve mental health in a confidential, caring space. UHS counselors use relational and solution-focused methods while attending to the developmental, identity-related, and mental health concerns of students.

Individual counseling sessions typically last 50 minutes, and providers work with students to address emotional, psychological, interpersonal, academic, or other issues that cause distress. Most students attend between one and four sessions to address their concerns.

Every new client starts with a phone screening to collaboratively determine your needs and connect you to the best resources. There is no charge for this appointment. To schedule an Access Appointment phone screening, call 608-265-5600 (option 2) or log on to MyUHS for 24-hour web appointment booking.

MHS primarily provides brief individual treatment for mental health concerns. If your concerns would best be addressed through specialized, longer-term, or open-ended services, a counseling group or community referral (a provider in the Madison area) may be recommended. Care managers can help to connect you to these resources.

If you think that your provider is not a good match for you, we encourage you to discuss your concerns directly with your provider. Our providers understand that not all client/patient/provider assignments are a good fit and will help facilitate a referral to another provider, as appropriate. If you have further concerns, you are welcome to contact the Director of Clinical Services.
