INTERVIEW: Shelby Lee Lowe Talks (And Premieres) New EP “Something In Me”

Hi Shelby, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I have been great all things considered this year! I’ve spent some much needed quality time with family, and I’ve worked on some music I that love.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Could’ve Fooled Me”?

“Could’ve fooled me” is a song I wrote with my producer Andrew Scott Wills and David Ross this year and it’s one of my favorite songs I’ve written. It’s a song about a man that has fallen in love with a girl that he dances with at bar who is reluctant to  give love a chance again after having her heart broken.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Well Andy brought that hook into our co-write and I loved it immediately! We brainstormed some ideas and landed on writing about a girl that leads on a guy.

The single comes off your new album Something In Me – what’s the story behind the title?

“Something in Me” is the title track of the project and is really the song that set this project in motion. I brought this idea to a Zoom co-write from my bedroom with Andy Wills and Rick Huckaby and it came together so well that I knew I had to cut it. It’s about finding a real connection when someone is brave enough to look past all of your  imperfections. This song is near and dear to my heart and will always be special to me.

How was the recording and writing process?

My producer Andrew Scott Wills and I have been writing songs together for years and have built a great chemistry with writing and recording. We both have similar taste in music, so working with him to make any project is always a blast. We had written “Could’ve Fooled Me” and “Something in Me” and were  trying to write a third song to go along with them. Andy was pitched a song from a writer in Texas named Ed Williams and we both knew right away we had to cut it. It’s one of the coolest written honky-tonk songs I’ve heard in awhile, and it was a lot of fun to record. We recorded at Ryan Youman’s Amber Sound Studio in Hermitage, TN with some amazing musicians and it was really exciting watching them bring these songs to life. We went for a new-traditional honky-tonk country sound, and I think it was a success.

What role does your hometown Possum Trot, Tenn. and the lessons/experiences you’ve had there play in your music and career?

Possum Trot is just a few miles stretch of land between two small towns in Southern Middle Tennessee, Lewisburg and Cornersville. It’s place where you throw a hand up at people when they drive by. There’s nothing there at all now, but I used to go the Possum Trot Grocery Store and play billiards as a child. Being from a small southern town, I couldn’t help but be surrounded by country music and good ole country people. Everything from the way people talk and treat one another down there has definitely rubbed off on my music and songwriting. I had a great childhood with a tight knit family and I am thankful for where I came from.

What aspect of love and relationships did you get to explore on this record?

This EP hits on three different sides of love and relationships. It has a song about wanting love and losing love and having a perfect love. I have related to each one of these songs at some point in my life and I think most people can say the same.

How has Johnny Cash and Hank Williams influenced your writing?

The first song that my great uncle Hilard taught me on guitar was “Folsom Prison Blues” and that started my love and respect for Johnny Cash. My dad is a big Hank Williams fan and growing up he had a Hank CD from Cracker Barrel that we listened to on repeat. I think “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” is one of the greatest country songs of all-time. I try not to veer to far from the roots of traditional country music.

Where do you typically find the inspiration for your songs and lyrics?

The inspiration for my songs really vary from song to song. Sometimes, I’ll hear someone say something and it’ll inspire a song idea, or sometimes things just pop in my head while I’m driving or mowing the yard.

What else is happening next in Shelby Lee Lowe’s world?

I’m getting ready to hit the studio again with some more songs I’m excited about and I’m hoping to start touring again when that is possible. I plan on writing as many songs as I can in the next few months. I’m just going to continue working on my craft and enjoying the process.
