On its surface, “Burning,” the lastest from Child Seat comes across as a synth pop rave up aloa Twin Shadow and Future Islands, where electronic music meets an ethereal whirlwind of vocal bliss. But dig futher beneath the combustible mix of 80’s meets early aughts and we hear a slaying solo from Smashing Pumpkins Jeff Schroeder Schroeder and a four minute mintue alt-pop song of almost virtuosic urgency. Formed in 2021 by Madeleine Mathews (MAWD) and Josiah Mazzaschi (Light FM, Bizou), the band heralds a gritty merge of new-wave meets alt-rock, beefing up the synth based rock prominent in bands like Chvrches and Wolf Alice.
With Child Seat’s debut album Bad Holiday out August 5 via Moonboot! Records, Glide is premiering the fervent single “Burning,” that true to its name does tire in natural tragedy with the ever-evolving game of life.
“The song “Burning” refers to the 2021 Caldor wildfire that threatened Mathews’ hometown and wiped-out hundreds of thousands of acres of land that she’d hiked and traversed throughout her youth as well as a small nearby town. “Burning” is a reminder that life throws us curveballs, including losing the things we love most. Nothing is set in stone, and nothing lasts forever. With the 2020 pandemic, it often especially felt like one roadblock after another was arising. Yet, the world keeps turning and life/time keeps charging forward even when the going gets tough. We are all handed various experiences and even though it can feel like heavy and unwarranted lessons, it often makes us appreciate the good things/little things while they are with us,” says the duo.
