Last summer, Atlanta garage-rock mainstays Gringo Star returned with their autoharp-laced first single since their 2018 LP Back to the City, “I’d Find You Again.” Following a handful of updates on the live-performance front—including a recent opening slot for The Dandy Warhols in their hometown, as well as the promise of an appearance at this year’s Shaky Knees Festival—the group is announcing that their sixth album On and On and Gone will arrive June 2 via My Anxious Mouth.
Ahead of that release date, they’re also sharing a second sample of the record with the vintage-textured “Told Me Once Before,” a ’70s-set ballad blending upbeat piano with the track’s somber vocals—all embellished with lush string arrangements. “‘Told Me Once Before’ represents one of the most minimalistic approaches to recording a song we’ve ever done,” the band’s Peter Furgiuele shares. “Most of the instruments were recorded live through a handful of mics. We tried to capture most of the song in the room live as a band on our ’70s Neumann U 87 microphone and later had our great friend Dave Claassen come in and add the string parts. It was a song I wrote during COVID isolation and Nick [Furgiuele] and I got together soon after and finished off the loose ends.”
