Fabel Honored for Innovative Teaching Practices

KPIC Executive Director Receives Garnet Apple Teaching Award

The faculty and students at the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy continue to receive well-deserved accolades for their academic achievements and community service.  One award in particular highlights the dedication of a longtime faculty member.

Patti Fabel, executive director of the Kennedy Pharmacy Innovation Center, received the Garnet Apple Award for Teaching Innovation, presented by the Office of the Provost. Recipients are selected for their demonstrated commitment to deliver the most successful current developments in teaching and learning to students. Up to six full-time faculty members are selected annually. Winners are invited to showcase their teaching innovations to the university community.

Betsy Blake, director of Interprofessional Education, nominated Fabel for the award. Blake shared that the success of the community pharmacy curriculum is evidenced through Fabel’s dedication to expanding and enhancing learning opportunities for students and by establishing pharmacy residency sites for post-graduate training.

Scott Sutton, department chair for Clinical Pharmacy and Outcomes Sciences, also commended Fabel’s innovative teaching in the classroom and described her team-based learning approach through the COVID-19 pandemic as ‘awe inspiring.’

I'm grateful to our students who put their trust in me to help them learn. They continue to amaze me with their hard work and flexibility - especially when I try something new in the classroom.

Fabel understands the significance of being included among such a respected group of teaching leaders.

“When you consider the other award winners and all of the excellent faculty at the University, it's humbling to receive the Garnet Apple Award. I want to thank the College administration for their support of my ideas and my faculty colleagues for their mentorship and encouragement,” she says. “Most importantly, I'm grateful to our students who put their trust in me to help them learn. They continue to amaze me with their hard work and flexibility especially when I try something new in the classroom.”

Fabel will be recognized along with the other Garnet Apple Award recipients at a future ceremony.
