Sydney Nano, University of Sydney’s Post

This afternoon, Sydney Nano, University of Sydney was pleased to host a session entitled "Nanotechnology for a Net-zero future: Addressing grand challenges at nanoscale" as part of the 1st University of Sydney Net Zero Initiative (NZI) Conference. The session was chaired by Dr Aysu K., a lecturer in Architectural Science at the University of Sydney. We first heard from Dr Arianna Brambilla who presented her team's research on Eco-Active Building Envelopes, funded by a Sydney Nano Grand Challenge scheme, which aims to develop the next generation of building envelopes that restore our ecosystem using emerging nanomaterials. Dr Fengwang Li then spoke about his team's Grand Challenge project titled Solar Fuels, co-led with Prof Anita Ho-Baillie, which harnesses the power of sunlight to manufacture renewable fuels in an efficient way. We next heard an excellent panel discussion led by Dr Aysu K. featuring insights from Prof Deanna D'Alessandro, prof Anita Ho-Baillie, and A/Prof Nicholas Lawson. Deanna reinforced the importance of considering the life cycle of materials for the construction industry, from the energy required to make them all the way through to how they will be recycled. Anita spoke of exciting developments in nanotechnology that will allow for the maximum efficiency of solar panels to increase dramatically. Nick emphasised the importance of social acceptance for new technologies, reflecting on the need to include government, policy makers, and the general community to work alongside scientists and engineers for the development and implementation of new technologies. Thank you to everyone who attended either in person or online, alongside our excellent speakers. We hope you learnt something new!
