Hear Aaron Watson’s Rollicking New Song ‘Outta Style’
After a dozen albums of old-school Texas twang, country traditionalist Aaron Watson is making modern moves with “Outta Style.”
The new single, produced with Marshall Altman, premieres today on Rolling Stone Country, offering fans the first glimpse of the material Watson’s been cooking up since last year, when his LP The Underdog became the first album by an independent male artist to top the country charts. Fueled by pop hooks, crisp production and a cyclic fiddle riff, “Outta Style” is the most stylish song of his career, pushing Watson – whose audience was built in Texas rodeos and dancehalls, a full day’s drive from the honky-tonks of downtown Nashville – closer to the sound of his chart-topping contemporaries.
“‘Outta Style’ is the story of me and my girl,” says Watson, whose wife also inspired The Underdog‘s lead single, “That Look.” An upbeat tribute to love and loyalty, “Outta Style” finds Watson tipping his hat to the country artists who came before him, too, with lines borrowed from Don McLean, Steve Earle, John Mellencamp and others.
He adds, “Kimberly and I have been through so much together – the good, the bad, and the ugly – yet here we are, all these years later, still acting like two kids in love.”
