Tennis Pro Of The Month September 2015

Frank Giampaolo
(Laguna Beach, California)

Playing and teaching tennis

Frank Giampaolo is a veteran author who has been coaching tennis since 1987. Born in New York, Frank grew up in Saudi Arabia because his dad worked there for the oil companies. And that's where he also started taking tennis lessons at the age of 13. After returning to the U.S. he played on his Ohio High School team and became a walk-on player on his Ohio State college team.

After college, Frank moved to California and began working for legendary coach Vic Braden at his Tennis College in Coto de Caza. For the next 15 years he worked off and on for Vic all over the country and also opened up Tennis Colleges for him.

The next 4 years Frank worked as Tennis Operations Manager at Sherwood Country Club in Westlake Village in the San Fernando Valley. It is there where he met Sam Querrey for the first time and coached him for two years, from age 12-14.

Frank Giampaolo pioneered the Tennis Parents Workshop in 1998 and has conducted seminars throughout the United States, Mexico, Australia, and Canada.

In 2002 Frank moved to Laguna Beach in Orange County and became Tennis Director at the Lake Forest Beach and Tennis Club where he started coaching high performance nationally ranked players. In 2002 he also founded the Mental-Emotional Tennis Workshop; since then, participants in the program have gone on to win more than 75 U.S. national titles. His students have won ATP and WTA Tour singles and doubles titles.

Giampaolo's innovative approach has earned him numerous honors, including being named the 2001 USPTA Southern California Tennis Director of the Year and being voted a top teaching professional in consecutive years by Southern California Tennis & Golf magazine.

Eliminating the disconnect between parents and coaches

The last 3 years Frank Giampaolo spent writing books about the subjects he had taught for so many years and traveling all over the country and abroad. Books, seminars, workshops became his life.

  • His Tennis Parents Workshops have been changing lives since 1998 with seminars throughout the United States, Mexico, Australia, Israel, New Zealand, and Canada.
  • His ‘Raising Athletic Royalty’ Workshop is approved and recommended by the USPTA as a specialty course. His workshops take place both on and off-court.
  • His Mental Emotional Workshops were introduced in 2002; since then, participants in the program have gone on to win more than 75 U.S. national titles.

Frank says, "I coach the coaches to eliminate the disconnect between parents and coaches in tennis, baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, swimming, gymnastics." He loves what he's doing and is very passionate about it, crediting much of his success to providing a customized plan for kids and their "entourage" (parents, coaches). "My customized plan includes, for instance, job descriptions for parents so they know what to do, what to expect, how to behave, how to support their kids. I have examples of kids improving from a section ranking of 150 to 10 because of a change in their entire organizational plan."
