The 🇺🇸 United States Defence Community has selected the University of Sydney to lead a project to suppress quantum errors, a key capability on the world’s path to quantum utility. The funding - provided by the US Army Research and US Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) - will enable access to IBM’s utility-scale quantum computing systems over the IBM Cloud ☁️. The USYD team - led by Professor Stephen Bartlett - will work on quantum error correction schemes with IBM scientists Dr Andrew Cross, Dr Neereja Sundaresan and Dr Ben Brown, a former postdoctoral researcher at the University of Sydney. It’s wonderful to see 🇦🇺 Australia leading the 🌏 world in advancing this truly amazing technology, a reflection of the vibrant quantum ecosystem in this country. Sorry Larry Marshall but this is typical Australian defeatism. 'Building a quantum computer is too big of an ambition. We can't keep up with the other big nations. We should find a niche in the supply chain and be happy to play our small part.' The facts say otherwise. The CSIRO report on Australian quantum technologies that you commissioned gives ample data on Australia's global leadership in this space and our unique advantages. We have the talent, with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems, ARC Centre for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology and Sydney Quantum Academy and our world-leading universities producing hundreds of experts in quantum computing. We have companies like Diraq, QuantX Labs, Quantum Brilliance, Q-CTRL, and many more, building the best quantum tech right here at home and being lauded around the world for how Australia is doing it right. International tech companies like Microsoft and Infleqtion have major research labs here in Australia, not to sell product but to build it. Australia is the place to do quantum. We agree on one thing. We can't put all of our eggs in one basket. An Australian quantum computing industry will require the strength and success of many companies, including our home-grown quantum industry. The National Quantum Strategy sets out a big ambition, now delivered - in part! - by a massive investment in quantum computing manufacturing in Brisbane. Australia needs to follow through with this strategy and support the whole sector. Then we will truly tap into Australia's quantum potential. Why accept a quantum computation if you have evidence that it's wrong? And why should this change just because the circuit is big, not small? Check out our work at https://lnkd.in/gZ-Z4iwZ that applies post selection at scale, with an exclusive decoder ft. a threshold for aborts! Breaking a big, error-corrected computation into lightweight attempts can result in large savings, even accounting for repetitions required when you have to abort. E.g. for 15-to-1 magic state distillation, we get a 60% reduction in spacetime volume and 75% reduction in # qubits. Along the way, we also develop new numerical methods to study threshold and subthreshold behaviour, both for post-selected failure probabilities, as well as for abort probabilities. 🔬 Research led by the lead author Dr Nicholas Hunt from the Faculty of Medicine and Health - University of Sydney and Sydney Local Health District has developed a new type of oral insulin based on nanotechnology. In the future, it could offer the 75 million people worldwide who use insulin for diabetes a more effective and needle-free alternative. 💊 Researchers are using nanotechnology to create a pill form of the medication, which includes a nanocarrier that greatly increases the absorbance of insulin in the gut when consumed orally. “We wanted to devote our time to develop successful oral insulin technology because we believe it will help people with diabetes have more control over their condition,” said Dr Nicholas Hunt.
