Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin (SDP) is to receive an honorary doctorate from New York University on Wednesday. She was invited to speak at NYU's All-University commencement ceremony for the class of 2023.

"A stalwart opponent of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, she has been an outspoken advocate for her nation joining the NATO alliance," said the NYU website announcing her attendance.

"She has been credited with steady and effective leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, and is a member of the vanguard of a new generation of European leadership. She was the first member of her family to go to college."

Marin has served as PM since 2019, and continued in a caretaker capacity after elections in early April.

There will also be honorary doctorates for Carolyn Bertozzi, a Nobel-winning chemist, dancer Misty Copeland, and Freeman A. Hrabowski, the former president of Maryland University.

At the same event, which is to be held at Yankee Stadium baseball park, author Salman Rushdie will also receive a medal of honour.

The Yankees will be in Canada playing the Toronto Blue Jays at the time, freeing up their home stadium for the academic ceremony.
