On this episode of HIKI NŌ — Hawaiʻi’s New Wave of Storytellers, Konawaena High School senior Jade Onaka hosts from her home in Kona on Hawaiʻi island.

In the show’s opening Student Reflection, Jade takes the audience behind the scenes of her experience co-producing a short animated film with One Day Studio at Teach for America.

HIKI NŌ is delighted to showcase this co-produced short film, entitled, ʻOhana and ʻĀina: Connecting Family, Farming and Freedom, which weaves interviews with Jade’s family and community members and explores how Hawai‘i might achieve a more sustainable food system and future.

Then, more stories of home town pride continue from HIKI NŌ students, first with a story about the 100-year history behind Konawaena High School.

The students of Honokaʻa High and Intermediate School on Hawaiʻi Island share a How-To video about best practices for safe driving in their small hometown of 2,000 people.

From the island of Kaua‘i, Larissa MacKnight from Kapaʻa High School shares a Student Reflection about the strong bond she formed with her sister after her parents’ divorce.

And from H.P. Baldwin High School on Maui, student Brielle Fernandez shares a vivid visual essay about what home means to her.
