Everytown for Gun Safety Applauds Members of Congress for Introducing Legislation to Stop Publication of Blueprints for Downloadable, Untraceable Guns

7.31.2018

NEW YORK – Everytown for Gun Safety, the country’s largest gun violence prevention organization, today applauded several members of Congress, including Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Senators Edward J. Markey (D-MA), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Bill Nelson (D-FL), Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and others who have introduced legislation to protect the public from the clear risks associated with the online release of blueprints for downloadable, untraceable guns. These common-sense bills would stop this dangerous development by blocking the blueprints for downloadable guns from being made available online and strengthening the law prohibiting undetectable firearms.

STATEMENT FROM NICK SUPLINA, MANAGING DIRECTOR FOR LAW AND POLICY FOR EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY:

“I am grateful that elected leaders in Congress are taking action to keep our communities safe from downloadable guns. Everytown will stand with our allies and fight tooth and nail to prohibit 3D printed guns. The legislation introduced today is critical for the security of the country, and I urge every member of Congress who cares about public safety to get behind these bills immediately. We don’t have a moment to waste.”

The legislation introduced today includes:

On Friday, after the close of business, the State Department modified the United States Munitions List to allow a single company to move forward with publication of blueprints for downloadable, untraceable guns. Since these blueprints became available online, there has been an outpouring of opposition from attorneys general, state legislators and Americans across the country. At least nine attorneys general have brought lawsuits to stop downloadable guns, and more than 20 sent a letter to the Trump Administration urging it to reverse course.
