Producers originally wanted Jack Lemmon to play Scrooge.

However, Lemmon wanted to play Kermit. The producers of The Muppet Christmas Carol decided Lemmon was out of his mind, and cast Michael Caine instead. Other actors considered early on for the role of Scrooge were David Hemmings, Ron Moody, Peter O'Toole, and George Carlin.

Before production began, Michael Caine told producer and director Brian Henson, "I'm going to play this movie like I'm working with the Royal Shakespeare Company. I will never wink, I will never do anything Muppety. I am going to play Scrooge as if it is an utterly dramatic role, and there are no puppets around me."
