Since Friday, at least 16 people have been shot in Baltimore-- at least 4 of them fatally. This includes a shooting last night during which 7 people were hurt and an officer fired their gun.

As of today-- Baltimore is outpacing last year's murder count. The city has seen 61 homicides so far-- compared to 60 this time last year.

At this rate, Baltimore is on pace for 286 murders in 2020. At this point last year, the city was on pace for 284.

But last year there was a spike in the murder rate-- beginning in the late spring and early summer-- that carried through the end of the year. The end result was 348 murders-- the city's highest-ever murder rate per capita.

The recent spike in gun violence follows a relatively peaceful beginning to March. As of March 12th, Baltimore had seen just four murders. At that rate, the city was on pace to see 10 murders this month. That would've been Baltimore's least deadly month since March, 2014 when there were 7 murders. The city ended the year with 211 homicides.

With 9 murders so far this month, the city is on pace for about 16 murders. That's still considerably less than the murder totals for January and February-- which was 26 each.
