Jann Freed, Central College professor emerita of business management and 1977 Central graduate, released her sixth book “Breadcrumb Legacy: How Great Leaders Live a Life Worth Remembering” (Routledge Publishing, 2023).

In her new book, Freed challenges readers, no matter what age, to think differently about legacy. She writes, rather than something we start considering at the end of our lives or careers, we can create a life worth remembering, starting today. The book also details actionable tips and strategies one can use to start creating their own breadcrumb legacy. Each day, in every small way, we leave crumbs of our legacy. Crumbs that people will remember.

In addition to being a published author, on her website, Freed blogs weekly about leading, living and “sage-ing” or conscious aging. She also has a monthly podcast series, “Becoming a Sage,” where she interviews top thought leaders in the field of conscious aging.

Freed taught business management at Central for 30 years. The former Mark and Kay De Cook Endowed Chair in Leadership and Character Development at Central left in 2011 to transition to broaden her community involvement.

Freed has continued to make community involvement a top priority. She is a director for the Bank Iowa Board, Mind and Spirit Counseling Center, Women United of United Way of Iowa and Nexus Executive Women’s Alliance. Freed has also been involved with the Planning and Zoning Commission for the city of Des Moines, Eat Greater Des Moines and Central Presbyterian Church.
