Omaha police identify Old Market shooting victim as 22-year-old, say one person is in police custody
Omaha police have released information on a shooting that took place during protests Saturday night downtown.
Police said in a report that officers heard gunshots around 11 p.m. in the area of 12th and Harney streets. Upon officers' arrival to the scene of 1207 Harney Street, they found 22-year-old James Scurlock suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center where he died.
Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said during a press conference Sunday that an individual connected to the shooting death of 22-year-old James Scurlock was detained and is still in police custody. No determination had yet been made in regards to charges, he said.
"Any charging decision on that front will come from the county attorney's office," Schmaderer said. "And he tells me that will be accompanied by a press conference."
Schmaderer did not identify the person in custody, but said that the individual was not released at any point. Police are not looking for any other suspects.
Several videos of the shooting circulated around social media, where you can hear two gunshots. Police are collecting those videos and urging anyone who has videos to share them with homicide detectives. They want people to call 402-444-5656.
Officials confirmed no officers were involved in the shooting.
City councilman Ben Gray hopes the county attorney makes a decision soon.
"This is one of those tragedies that should have never happened," Gray said.
Hundreds swarmed the downtown area late Saturday night as part of ongoing protests against the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in custody of Minneapolis police.
