Why is it so important to fight hatred? Students and their teachers are invited to join this special webinar, presented by Sheryl Ochayon of Yad Vashem, to explore these issues

This ASA Webinar will discuss that in the field of aging, it is important to recognize ethical issues that can arise when working with older adults. There are a variety of areas in which ethical issues can emerge, including complex family dynamics, end-of-life wishes, preserving dignity and respect, promoting independence, and keeping the individual safe. There are various factors that can make older adults vulnerable to abuse, neglect and ill intent. Learning about these potential trouble spots can help us understand how to reduce the risk of harm, how to advocate for the older adult and how to report issues to the proper authorities when necessary.

MONTHLY COLUMN by Michaelle Cooke, SCOSA TES

Some time ago I registered with the Alzheimer’s Prevention Registry.  The registry connects researchers to people interested in participating in a study.  The registration process is relatively painless:  I filled out an online form, provided them with a DNA swab, and then waited to be matched with a study.

Recently I got the opportunity to participate in a brain health study being conducted by the University of Texas called the Brain Health Project.  It’s a longitudinal study that will eventually engage tens of thousands of people aged 18 - 100.  The goal of the project is to study how brain health – clarity, fortitude and resilience - can be improved with appropriate training.

Results from an initial trial (Brain Health Trial Results) were positive.  The program starts with standardized assessments leading to a Brain Health Index (BHI).  A meeting with a brain health coach is held, then access to brain training begins.  The training is online and includes education and action items to help implement what’s been taught.

I recommend checking out the Center for Brain Health for tips on how to improve your brain health, whether or not you sign up for the study.

SCOSA NEWS & PROGRAMS ESPECIALLY FOR PROFESSIONALS, STUDENTS, & FACULTY

SCOSA seeks inclusivity in our programming but some of our programming is particularly relevant for the professional development of current providers of services to older adults and to students on their path to professions (and their professors).  This month, we particularly draw your attention to the several American Society on Aging Webinars that we have listed in section two above.  We invite faculty to assign these to students (for credit or extra credit), and students to request credit from their faculty.

GERO COORDINATOR’S COLUMN

Members of the Gerontology Club led the way in the 2021 Walk to End Alzheimer’s! Team Stockton/SCOSA was represented in Ocean City, New Jersey on Saturday, October 23rd. This annual event raises awareness and funds for those struggling with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. See the link below to make a donation. Also see the link, “Know the 10 Signs” from the Alzheimer’s Association. This useful checklist is a valuable tool in helping someone who may have the early signs of the disease.

Stockton Age Friendly University (AFU) Update

by Karen Rose, Ph.D., SCOSA AFU champion Adjunct professor, Psychology and Health Science

This month we are pleased to report on the results of the national RRF Foundation for Aging grant, Taking the Pulse of Age-Friendliness in Higher Education in the US Today. Stockton University participated in this two-phase national assessment that measured age-friendly practices and campus perceptions of age-friendliness.  Campus perceptions reflect responses from 68 faculty, 112 staff, and 101 students.

The research team (Silverstein, Whitbourne, Bowen, Montepare, & Beaulieu) found that Stockton University currently incorporates 83% of the recommended age-friendly practices across its campuses, a score that reflects high marks in many areas, but also reflects areas for improvement and development. High marks were earned in the areas of recommended practices in the following areas: teaching and learning that incorporate diverse age groups (89%), outreach and engagement of older adults (84%) and a physical environment that is consistent with ADA guidelines (88%). These numbers indicate that Stockton delivers on slightly above 8 out of 10 practices in each area but doesn’t indicate the level or quality of performance in each area. Open-ended comments helped to elaborate; for example, one undergraduate student remarked, “Many of my classes have students that are much older than I am, and I love hearing about their experiences and learning from them.”

The report recommends areas where Stockton might expand age friendly practices already in place such as increasing awareness of the University’s Age-Friendly University status, increasing recruitment of older adults on campus, and enhancing connections with retired employees. It also suggested areas for new age-friendly initiatives such as providing faculty development grants for designing courses and materials that support the needs of age-diverse learners.

Again, many thanks to all who participated in this project as the findings have helped to identify Stockton’s strengths and gaps, highlight opportunities, and describe the unique needs and perspectives of SCOSA participants along with Stockton alumni, retirees, staff, and students. We truly appreciate your time and input.
