Stockton Falls To Rutgers-Camden; Campbell Breaks 2,000 Point Mark

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (12-7, 8-4 NJAC) could not withstand the torrid shooting of Rutgers-Camden (10-9, 5-7 NJAC) and dropped a 77-71 contest on Wednesday night. The Ospreys were by EJ Matthews-Spratley (Cherry Hill/Cherry Hill East) with a team-high 22 points.

DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) scored 17 points and in doing so, eclipsed the 2,000-point mark for his career. He becomes the third Osprey to break the barrier, joining Carl Cochran (1993-97) and Val Brown (1981-85).

Stockton fell behind early to the visitors, trailing 13-6 at the 12:34 mark, before the offense got going. 10 straight markers by Campbell pushed the Ospreys to a 16-13 lead at 10:33 of the frame. His milestone basket came at 11:07 on a breakaway dunk.

The Scarlet Raptors battled back to regain the lead at 23-22 but the Ospreys started to put some distance between the squads. A 13-2 spurt, led by Matthews-Spratley, in a four minute span gave the home team a 35-25 advantage. The team traded baskets over the last three minutes and the Ospreys took a 38-33 lead into the locker room.

The final period saw the teams trade leads until the Scarlet Raptors took control for good with 12:28 remaining in regulation at 50-49. From there, Rutgers-Camden was able to stave off the Ospreys to take the 77-71 victory as the visitors shot an outstanding 54.0 % (27-50) for the game, including a blistering 15-26 (57.7%) in the second half.

Matthews-Spratley pilfered a game-high four steals to go with his point total, while Campbell would finish with 17 points giving him 2,010 for his career and a team-high four assists. Martin Anguelov (Cape May/Wildwood Catholic) and Tayvon Gaither (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) scored nine and eight points respectively with Gaither grabbing a game-high 12 boards.

For the Raptors, Cameron Downs scored 22 points, with Cherif Kanoute posting a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Eric Benjamin chipped in with 11 markers.

Stockton will try and snap a two-game losing skid when William Paterson comes to Galloway on Saturday afternoon. Tip off is set for 3 pm.
