Teaching Evaluations, Faculty Service, Faculty Scholarly/Creative Work, and Tenure Clock - Emergency Recommendations (FPPC)

ACADEMIC AND STUDENT AFFAIRS PROCESS AND PROCEDURES

Effective date:  March 30, 2020

Winter 2020 Semester Only

1.   Student Impressions of Teaching

LIFT Student impressions of teaching surveys will not be conducted during Winter 2020 semester.  Faculty who wish to collect feedback from their students may do so by setting up a survey in Blackboard (under Course Tools) or through other means. Some courses with a shorter term have had LIFT evaluations completed. Any student evaluation completed for the Winter 2020 semester shall only be formative and not be included in merit or personnel decisions.

2.   Faculty Service Work

On the 2020 Faculty Activity Report (FAR), faculty members should note any interruptions to their service. There will be no penalty for service work that was stopped for the last five weeks of the Winter 2020 semester. Faculty should note any unexpected additional service work. Faculty who had to make the switch to remote teaching, particularly those with no experience, performed extra service that should be recognized.

3.   Scholarly and Creative Work

On the 2020 FAR, faculty members should note any interruptions to their scholarly/creative activity. Faculty, unit heads, and deans are to take these circumstances into consideration during annual reviews.

4.   Pausing the Tenure Clock

Any regular, untenured faculty member is allowed to pause the tenure clock (Board Policy, BOT 4.2.7.2) for a period of one year if their work was significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in one of the following ways:

  • Faculty member’s significant health issues, illness or injury;
  • Substantial care giving responsibility for a person residing in the household or someone listed in Board Policy, BOT 4.2.30.3;
  • Unforeseen and significant disruption that is outside the control of the faculty member and is directly related to an area of evaluation criteria for contract renewal or tenure as stated in Board Policy, BOT 4.2.9.

The faculty member should make a request to the Dean and describe how the COVID-19 situation affected their work. Deans should approve the request if a reasonable explanation is provided. The faculty member will not be penalized because a request was made or granted. Any request for a pause of the tenure clock must be made by December 1, 2020.
