Stockton Advances to Sweet 16 with 70-63 Victory

Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University (26-4) won their 10th straight game with a hard-fought 70-63 over #10 Johns Hopkins (23-4) on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the #23 ranked Ospreys advanced to the sectional round of the NCAA Tournament (Sweet 16) for the first time since 2014.

DJ Campbell (Vineland/Vineland) led the Ospreys with 28 points, giving him a total of 61 markers in the two NCAA contests over the weekend. Kadian Dawkins (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) contributed 15 points for the Ospreys.

After an opening three-pointer by the Blue Jays, Stockton controlled the first half of play. The Ospreys jumped out to a 22-7 lead at the 11:23 mark, powered by balanced scoring. Five points by Campbell, four by Dawkins and three each by Jordan Williams (Trenton/Trenton Central) and Kyion Flanders (Wildwood/Wildwood) gave Stockton the lead.

The Ospreys kept up the pressure, leading by as many as 16 at 26-10 before the Blue Jays closed the gap. An 11-3 spurt pushed Hopkins back to within eight at 35-27 with 1:53 left before Campbell ended the half with a jumper and a 37-27 halftime advantage.

The visitors shook off a tough shooting first half and came out of the break firing from behind the arc. Tom Quarry with five points and Carson James with a three, gave the Blue Jays life as they closed the gap to 42-37 with 17:33 remaining. JHU kept up the pace and eventually knotted the game at 56-56 with 7:25 left in regulation.

Another basket then gave Johns Hopkins their first lead since the opening bucket at 58-56 at the 6:12 mark, setting up the tense final minutes. A 6-1 run by the Ospreys enabled the home squad to regain the lead 62-59, but the Blue Kays tied the game on a three-pointer with 2:56 left to play.

From there, Stockton was able to take control of the final 2:33 with a last surge of 8-1 to claim the win, starting with a Dawkins layup that put the Ospreys in front for good at 64-62. Four foul shots by Campbell and two by Dawkins sealed the win and pushed Stockton to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, 70-63.

Stockton's 26 wins are its most since the 2013-14 season when the Ospreys went 25-5 and the 26 victories are tied for second most school history (30-3 in 2008-09, 26-4 in 1995-96).

Campbell topped the team with eight rebounds and a pair of steals, while Dawkins added six rebounds. Rynell Lawrence (Millville/Millville) chipped in with seven points and seven boards.

Quarry led the Blue Jays with 15 points, with Ethan Bartlett adding 10 points, all in the first half. Sidney Thybulle posted game highs of 11 rebounds and four assists while blocking two shots.

Stockton will play in the sectional round of the NCAA Tournament next weekend, March 11-12. The opponent, site and game time will be announced on NCAA.com on Monday.
