Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University looks to continue its NCAA Tournament run when the Ospreys face Christopher Newport in a sectional round game at Marietta College (Ohio) today at 4 p.m. The winner advances to the NCAA quarterfinals tomorrow.
Â
Stockton is trying to reach the NCAA quarterfinals for the fourth time in school history (1987, 1996, 2009). The Ospreys enter the matchup against Christopher Newport with a 10-game winning streak. After five straight home games at The Sports Center, they are playing on the road for the first time since February 16.
Â
Stockton's 26 wins this year are tied with the 1995-96 squad for the second-highest total in the program's 50 seasons. The Ospreys were ranked 23rd in the most recent D3hoops.com national poll, which came out prior to the start of the NCAA Tournament.
Â
DJ Campbell, the NJAC Player of the Year, leads the Ospreys in most statistical categories, highlighted by a scoring average of 20.2 points per game. No player in NCAA Division III has played more minutes than Campbell (1032:43), and he also is eighth in the nation in three-pointers (93), ninth in points (606) and 19th in steals (67).
Â
Campbell's 606 points and 93 three-pointers each are the third-highest season totals in Stockton history. NJAC Defensive Player of the Year
Kyion Flanders (11.2 ppg, 2.1 spg) and NJAC Honorable Mention
Kadian Dawkins (14.4 ppg, 4.5 apg) join Campbell to form the top trio for the Ospreys. Dawkins' 136 assists this year are tied for the fourth-best total ever at Stockton.
Â
Rynell Lawrence (9.4 pg, 4.6 PG) and
Jonathan Azoroh (6.4 ppg, 4.2 rpg) have rounded out the starting lineup since the late stages of the regular season and through the team's postseason run. Azoroh is shooting 56.6 percent from the field (69-122) while Lawrence is hitting at 53 percent (61-115), including 40 percent from three-point range (19-47).
Â
Christopher Newport (Va.) is ranked fourth in the nation by D3hoops.com. The Captains are 26-2 with a 23-game winning streak since their last loss back on November 21. Among CNU's 26 victories is a 77-76 overtime win over top-ranked Randolph-Macon that was the only defeat of the season for the Yellow Jackets.
Â
If the Ospreys get past Christopher Newport, then they would face either Marietta (27-2) or Oswego State (N.Y.) (27-2) in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday at 7 p.m. With 27 victories apiece, Marietta and Oswego are two of just four teams in Division III with more victories than Stockton. They are ranked second and 17th respectively in the D3hoops.com poll.
