Macrophage inflammasome activation and the mechanism of lipolysis resistance in aged adipose
Older adults often have increased visceral adiposity (body fat that is stored in the abdominal cavity) which is associated with higher risk for metabolic diseases. Lypolysis, the process of converting fatty acid to energy, declines with age. Simultaneously, inflammation of organs, including fatty tissue, increases. In the proposed study, Dr. Christina Camell will investigate the causes of this inflammation and resistance to lypolysis. The objective is to use the results of the study to create treatment that will prevent the inflammation and improve the ability of elderly to maintain a healthy body weight.
