It’s well known that Britons love a good cup of tea, but did you know that certain types could help you lose weight too? While most weight loss plans focus on the foods you’re eating and lots of calorie counting, it can be easy to forget about your drinks. However, a new analysis has revealed that drinking one type of tea could help you to reach your weight loss goals fast.

Tea has been hailed for its health benefits for centuries, thanks to its high levels of antioxidants.

But while green tea and matcha tea are best known for their weight loss benefits, they’re not the only type that can help you slim down your waistline.

The experts at the Tea Advisory Panel have reviewed research studies from the last 20 years and discovered that there’s an unsung tea hero that could boost weight loss.

In the largest data review of its kind, the experts found that drinking rooibos tea has a wealth of surprising health benefits.

Rooibos tea, which is also known as red bush tea, originates from South Africa, and is often loved by those who want to avoid the coffee jitters as it is caffeine-free.

But as well as having a great taste that makes it a good alternative to a traditional cup of black tea, it could also be the key to slimming down.

Tea chemist and scientist Dr Tim Bond from the Tea Advisory Panel explained: “Of course, there’s no replacement for a healthy diet and plenty of movement when it comes to losing weight, but rooibos could provide some extra support.

“Research has found that it contains a compound called aspalathin, which in laboratory studies, was shown to reduce fat, boost fat metabolism and block fat cell formation.”

Dr Bond also said it would be worth switching your daily cuppa to the red bush tea if you’re a bit of a sugar addict.

“As rooibos is naturally sweet, little to no sugar or sweetener is needed, allowing for a delicious calorie-free drink, which will curb a sweet tooth!” he added.

The expert recommended staggering four to six cups of the herbal drink over the course of the day.

“Be sure to brew for at least 10 minutes to really reap the benefits,” he warned.

As well as burning fat, the super-tea could also aid weight loss by balancing out your blood sugar.

“We need sugars; they’re part of our metabolism, but excess sugar means the spike in blood glucose triggers insulin production which helps shunt the sugars off to be stored,” said Dr Bond.

“An indication in how resistance the body is to insulin and insulin spikes, is fasting blood glucose.”

In a recent study by the Tea Advisory Panel, fasting blood glucose was more stable in those that drank rooibos.

Plus, rooibos is rich in antioxidants including aspalathin, which may help to reduce the risk of developing diabetes for the same reason.

Better yet, these antioxidants can also help you to recover from exercise.

If your workouts are causing you aches or pains, adding red bush tea to your daily routine could help, thanks to the tea’s anti-inflammatory properties.

“Antioxidants interfere with free radicals and stop these free radicals going on to do damage,” Dr Bond revealed.

The miracle tea can also regulate cholesterol and even support bone health, as it contains essential bone-strengthening minerals including potassium, calcium and magnesium.
