Confluence: Nature as Medium
Works by Allison Svoboda
Opening reception: Friday, April 5, 6 – 8pm

Exhibition dates: April 5 – May 31, 2024

For her exhibit at the Marshall J. Gardner Center for the Arts, Chicago artist Allison Svoboda employs ink on paper to create large-scale paintings and collages that reflect organic patterns found in nature. Often, her work is done on-site on the shores of Lake Michigan, where she sits in quiet contemplation in a place of natural beauty. Once fully in touch with her surroundings, Allison begins her mark-making using natural elements including wind, water, salt, sticks, and even her breath to move the ink. Says Svoboda of her process, “the same way a plant grows following the path of least resistance, the quick gestures and simplicity of working with ink allows the law of least resistance to prevail as the ink finds its path across the paper. Ink gives a more spontaneous experience as I allow it to move where it flows naturally.”

Allison’s work holds a delicate and ethereal beauty that creates a contemplative and approachable atmosphere for viewers. The response has been positive with solo shows at the Walker Fine Arts and the Milan Expo. Her installations have been commissioned internationally with sculptural public works exhibited in Chicago and as far away as Australia. Svoboda has been the recipient of many residencies including a Hemera Fellowship to study shibori, orizomegami, and calligraphy in Japan in 2016. For the past three years, she has also been involved in the Chicago Conservation Corps, a group that creates pollinator parkways.

During the exhibition run, Svoboda will offer two workshops: Orizomegami a Japanese art form of folding and dying paper to reflect patterns found in nature; and a native plant-inspired nature walk and seed-bomb workshop. Both workshops are family-friendly events suitable for adults and kids aged 8 and up and will be offered free and open to the public. RSVP at millerbeacharts.org

The Spider or the Fly?

The Towle Theater presents The SPider or the Fly?

A ThrilleR
By Sam Bobrick

MAY 3-5, 10-11, 17-19, 2024
Friday-Saturday 8pm, Sunday 2pm

Presented through special arrangement with Concord Theatricals.

Director - Jeff Casey

In this unique psychological thriller, two stories unfold simultaneously in the same space but in different time frames.  Maura and Scott meet while serving on jury duty for a murder trial and get romantically involved with each other. As their relationship develops, they discover they adamantly disagree on what the verdict should be. They also realize that each is not the person the other thought they were. At the same time and in the same space that their story is being played out to its frightening climax, Jan and Tom, another young couple who have just met, weave through their unusual relationship that strangely enough has ties to the same murder case.

The Towle Theater does not offer advisories about subject matter, as sensitivities vary from person to person. If you have any questions about content, language or age-appropriateness that might have a bearing on patron comfort, please contact the box office at 219-937-8780.

A Mass for Troubled Times concert featuring the South Holland Master Chorale

A Mass for Troubled Times

May 19, 2024 at 4pm at All Souls Parish located at

3010 Ridge Rd, Lansing, IL 60438

We certainly live in troubled times. this concert celebrates the amazing things God has given us, things to be thankful for, and a cry for peace in the world.

The concert presents the stirring work “i thank You God for most this amazing day” by Dan Forrest (text by e.e. cummings), paired with the “Mass for Troubled Times” by Franz Joseph Haydn. Written in 1798 when the world was in turbulent times with Napolean’s army challenging European powers, this work is considered by many scholars to be Haydn’s greatest single composition.

It’s a Masterwork for the ages.

The power of the human voice can change the world. Our voices resound in glorious harmony and in one accord as we conclude the Mass exclaiming: “DONA NOBIS PACEM” - GIVE US PEACE!

Valpo Creates Camp: Fridays in June

VALPO CREATES CAMP: FRIDAYS IN JUNE

In partnership with the Valparaiso Family YMCA, we were able to create a meaningful camp experience last year by rotating art activities each Friday to engage learners in the Arts. We will provide the same festivities for 2024!

We highlighted some of our local art organizations: Painted Palette for visual arts, Indiana Ballet Theatre for dance, Memorial Opera House for theater, and Quinlan and Fabish for a musical petting zoo. This #ARTreach catered to young learners, and VCC is planning to offer similar programming for 2024 and beyond to the aging, special needs, at-risk, and veteran communities.

Gordon Lightfoot Tribute Concert

Mike Fornes’ portrayal of Gordon Lightfoot is a simple, honest effort to entertain. Retired from a decades-long radio and television play-by-play career in the NHL and MLB, Mike has a new career that blend the woods, water and wildlife with the North Country music heard in his shows.

He plays the role of “Gord” in first person, with his storytelling of the songs and the circumstances of how they were written. His tireless research and personal interaction with Lightfoot have lead to accurate mannerisms, speaking patterns, clothing, and of course identical guitars used by the Canadian icon on stage.

On stage, Mike demonstrates his love of this timeless music that captured millions during the 1960s to 1980s. He is backed by four talented area musicians who play the roles of Gordon Lightfoot’s stage band, replicating parts heard on recordings and in live performances by Carter Lancaster (lead guitar), Barry Keane (drums), Rick Haynes (bass) and Michael Heffernan (keyboards).

DINING OPTION:
For an additional $32, add a pre-show meal, presented by Trama Catering. Call Trama Catering and Events Office for reservation and meal payment: 219-836-1930, Ext. 2.

Pippin is the story of one young man's journey to be extraordinary. Heir to the Frankish throne, the young prince Pippin
is in search of the secret to true happiness and fulfillment. He seeks it in the glories of the battlefield, the temptations of the flesh and the intrigues of political power (after disposing of his father, King Charlemagne the Great). In the end, though, Pippin finds that happiness lies not in extraordinary endeavors, but rather in the unextraordinary moments that happen every day.

Young Frankenstein

Young Frankenstein

Book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan
Music and Lyrics by Mel Brooks

Friday, September 27th through Sunday, October 13, 2024 at the Memorial Opera House in Valparaiso

It’s alive! The electrifying adaptation of Mel Brook’s monstrously funny film will leave you in stitches!

From the creators of the record-breaking Broadway sensation, The Producers, comes this monster new musical comedy. The comedy genius, Mel Brooks, adapts his legendarily funny film into a brilliant stage creation – Young Frankenstein!

Grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced "Fronk-en-steen") inherits his family's estate in Transylvania. With the help of a hunchbacked sidekick, Igor (pronounced "Eye-gore"), and a leggy lab assistant, Inga (pronounced normally), Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors. "It's alive!" he exclaims as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather's. Eventually, of course, the monster escapes and hilarity continuously abounds.

Every bit as relevant to audience members who will remember the original as it will be to newcomers, Young Frankenstein has all the of panache of the screen sensation with a little extra theatrical flair added. It will surely be the perfect opportunity for a production company to showcase an array of talents. With such memorable tunes as "The Transylvania Mania," "He Vas My Boyfriend" and "Puttin' on the Ritz," Young Frankenstein is scientifically proven, monstrously good entertainment.

Godspell - 2012 Revised Version

Conceived and Originally Directed by John-Michael Tebelak

Music and New Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz

Presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). www.mtishows.com

Directed by Michael Glorioso
Music Direction by Katelyn Leonard-White

Godspell 2012 is delightfully based on the Gospel according to Matthew. It is a masterful retelling of the original sensation, injected with contemporary references and dazzling new arrangements. A small group of people help Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques and a hefty dose of comic timing. An eclectic blend of songs, ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, is employed as the story of Jesus' life dances across the stage. Dissolving hauntingly into the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, Jesus' messages of kindness, tolerance and love come vibrantly to life. Godspell is a sensation that continues to touch audiences.

By Edward Allan Baker

Directed by Jason Utesch

Join us for another Studio Diner Theatre presentation!

The addition of a home cooked "diner dinner" created a new experience for audiences in our intimate studio theatre. This year, we meet Lonnie, a married but lonely truck driver, and Nickie, his mistress, a married but lonely hardware store clerk, meet twice a week in an apartment to talk and kiss. They have chosen a day to tell their spouses they are leaving them, but when the day comes, there is a message on Lonnie’s answering machine: “You’re a dead man.” Lonnie wants to put off telling their spouses until he finds out who is after him,

Poetry Slam - First Friday

Readings begin at 5:30pm at the Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City with audience members as judges for this raucous but friendly competition. Admission is free, and all are welcome to cheer on the performers, explore LCA’s art exhibits and enjoy the cash bar and complimentary light refreshments.

This year LCA's poetry slam will have a new format. Marc Kelly Smith, the originator of the Poetry Slam movement, will host the event. The night will begin with an open mic inviting performers of all walks to share their original works or perform a favorite poem from another author. A fill-in-blank poem themed for the occasion will be provided to members of the audience on the chance they might be inspired to become a poet themselves. The slam will conclude with the (made famous at the Green Mill) Dumb Rhyming Word Game. The winner of which will be crowned as this year's LCA Poetry Slam Champion.

Poets interested in participating in LCA’s Poetry Slam should prepare poems under three minutes in length for the open mic and register by contacting Jessie Sexton at 219-874-4900 ext. 107 or jsexton@lubeznikcenter.org. Spots are limited, so call or email today!

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde presented by Indiana University Northwest School of the Arts

Indiana University Northwest School of the Arts announces the upcoming production of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, a play adapted by Jeffery Hatcher, from the novella Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Audiences will be familiar with the plot of the timeless novel: a scientist, who in the pursuit of the greater good creates a terrifying alter ego. But the play has its unique twists that make it exciting to watch.

In Hatcher’s version of the story, he pits Jekyll and Hyde against one another. “I’m trying to have some fun with the notion that Jekyll and Hyde play a cat-and-mouse game with each other and with the question of just who we should be rooting for,” Hatcher said. Associate Professor of Theatre Mark Baer brought this production to the Theatre Northwest stage after directing the same script at Commonweal Theater Company in Minnesota last summer. Directing the same script twice in one year is a first for Baer. “This production benefits from the deep knowledge of the play I gained from the previous production,” Baer said. “But it’s remarkable how different two productions of the same script can be with a new cast, design team and performance space. This will be a whole new show.”

Collaboration with IU South Bend

For this production, Theater Northwest has partnered with Associate Professor of Theatre Jason Resler of IU South Bend, who serves as costume designer.

“This is a great collaboration between the two regional campuses,” Baer said. “It is our hope that IU Northwest School of the Arts can forge an even deeper partnership with IU South Bend for future projects, as we have successfully done with other theaters, like Gary’s West Side Theatre Guild.”

Cast and crew

The cast of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde will include a mix of students and community members. IU Northwest students include theater majors Gabriel Ashbach (Sir Danvers Carew/Inspector/Drunkard/Porter/Hyde) and Alexander Eddy (Poole/Sanderson/Old Woman/Hyde), as well as fine arts student Dashiana Bingham (Richard Enfield/Student 1/Maid/Hyde).

Community members include Grant Fitch (Dr. Henry Jekyll); Emily Dixon (Elizabeth Jelkes/Child/Student 2); Brandon Hearn (Gabriel Utterson/Hyde); and Rodney Thornton (H.K. Lanyon/Police Doctor/Hyde).

Performances of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
All performances will take place at the Arts & Sciences Mainstage Theatre on the IU Northwest campus

  • April 4 at 7 p.m.

  • April 5 at 7 p.m.

  • April 6 at 3 p.m.

  • April 12 at 7 p.m.

Admission is $5 to the general public, and free to IU Northwest students, faculty and staff with a valid ID. Reservations can be made online: https://northwest.iu.edu/theatre/forms/ticket-reservations.html
