Upstate South Carolina journalist Gabe Whisnant has been named news director at the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, executive editor Steve Bruss announced Friday.

Whisnant will oversee day-to-day operations of the newsroom, leading a team of 12 journalists covering Spartanburg and Spartanburg County. He has been serving as interim news director since April 20.

“Gabe is committed to this community and to meaningful journalism that will keep residents informed and help move Spartanburg forward,” Bruss said. “I’m excited to work with Gabe and to watch him lead this talented team.”

Whisnant has worked with the Herald-Journal since March 2017 as the publication’s assistant managing editor/digital editor. Whisnant’s first reporting job was in Goldsboro in 2002. He also has worked at news outlets in Shelby and Gastonia in North Carolina. He is a native of Shelby. He studied political science at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.

“I’m honored and excited to lead Spartanburg’s team of journalists,” Whisnant said. “We take great pride in covering the issues and sharing the stories that affect our growing Upstate community.”

Whisnant assumes his new position immediately.

The Herald-Journal is part of the USA Today Network, and works closely with two other Gannett news organizations in Upstate South Carolina, the Greenville News and the Anderson Independent Mail.

Whisnant and his wife, Heather live in Spartanburg and spend a lot of time outside around the Spartanburg community.
