Hubert Duvall Osteen Jr., 84, husband of Jacqueline "Jackie" Brown Osteen, formerly of Greenville, died on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2020, at his home.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Hubert Duvall Osteen and Margaret "Toody" Weeks Osteen. He was the retired chairman of Osteen Publishing Co. Inc. and served as the editor and publisher of The Sumter Item for more than 40 years. He was past president of the South Carolina Press Association. Mr. Osteen was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder. He was a graduate of Woodberry Forest School in Virginia, a graduate of the University of Missouri and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University in New York. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in Vietnam, and he was a member of The Fortnightly Club. He was past chairman of the Downtown Revitalization Board. He was the Sumter Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year in 1994 and received the Sumter YMCA Humanitarian Award in 1995.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; three sons, Hubert Graham Osteen II and wife, Julia Richmond Osteen, of Georgetown, Kyle Brown Osteen and wife, Susan Wells Osteen, and John "Jack" Duvall Osteen and wife, Susan Doherty Osteen, all of Sumter; six grandchildren, Katherine Duvall Osteen and husband, Gordon Fitzgerald Vernon, of New York City, Hubert Graham Osteen III and wife, Kathleen Catherall Osteen, of Jacksonville, Florida, Margaret Wells Osteen of Greenville, Kyle Brown Osteen Jr. of Sumter, Loren Elise Osteen and John Duvall Osteen Jr. of Sumter; and two great-grandchildren, Gordon Wilds Vernon and Emily Gray Osteen.

Private graveside services will be held at the Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Nick Cheek officiating.
