Meet the Emergency Medicine Research Team!
Marina Griffith
My name is Marina Griffith and I have been a part of the Department of Emergency Medicine for about 8 years. I started as an undergraduate research associate and gained a love for research and continued to move forward in the department. I received a bachelor's in psychology back in 2018 and am continuing my education with a master's degree in public health. I am married and have a beautiful 9-month-old little girl and a 5-month-old miniature schnauzer. We love to travel the world, camp, and paddleboard whenever we can. I love reading and learning new things and can't wait to share these future experiences with my little family.
Devin Thomas
Devin is graduating from the University of Utah, where he studied neurobiology. Currently, he is applying to medical school to pursue his dream of becoming a physician. When he's not focused on his academic pursuits, Devin enjoys spending time outdoors, particularly indulging in fly fishing. He also has a passion for bodybuilding and will be competing in a show later this year. Recently married and a proud homeowner in Lehi, Devin's life is filled with exciting milestones as he navigates his professional and personal aspirations.
CTSI Call for Applications: Masters in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) program
The MSCI degree program provides classroom and mentored experience in clinical research and innovation, preparing its trainees for careers in academic medicine, the allied health sciences, and global health-related fields. The program prepares trainees to be competitive investigators and collaborators capable of gaining extramural funding for their projects. The curriculum of the MSCI focuses on the theories, models, competencies, methods, and tools used to conduct bench-to-bedside and bedside-to-community translational research.
Please send ALL research contracts and budgets to Austin Stevens (austin.stevens@hsc.utah.edu) for review and processing to ensure compliance with University policy and proper budgeting.

NIH Office of Research Infrastructure Programs (ORIP) S10 Instrumentation Programs
ORIP's S10 Instrumentation Grant Programs support purchases of state-of-the-art commercially available instruments to enhance research of NIH-funded investigators. Instruments that are awarded are typically too expensive to be obtained by an individual investigator with a research project grant. Every instrument awarded by an S10 grant is to be used on a shared basis, which makes the programs cost-efficient and beneficial to thousands of investigators in hundreds of institutions nationwide. S10 awards are made to domestic public and private institutions of higher education, as well as nonprofit domestic institutions, such as hospitals, health professional schools, and research organizations. To be eligible for an S10 award, an institution must identify three or more principal investigators with active NIH research awards who demonstrate a substantial need for the requested instrument.
Awards are issued for 1 year, and matching funds are not required. However, ORIP expects institutions that compete for S10 awards to provide an appropriate level of support for the associated infrastructure, such as the space to house the instrument, technical personnel, and post-award service contracts for instrument maintenance and operation. Types of instruments supported by S10 funding include, but are not limited to, X-ray diffraction systems, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometers, DNA and protein sequencers, biosensors, electron and confocal microscopes, cell-analyzers, and biomedical imagers.
Building Research Investigator Trainee Experiences (BRITE-IDEAS) VA HSR Fellowship
Building Research Investigator Trainee Experiences (BRITE-IDEAS) is an interprofessional post-graduate fellowship program. The mission of the program is to develop future VA leaders in health services research (HSR) and to support trainees to achieve independent research careers through mentorship, career development, and experiential learning that focuses on the core competencies of a Learning Healthcare System (LHS). Our vision is for a community of mentors, graduates, and trainees in HSR, with the research, leadership, and mentoring skills necessary to cultivate ongoing generations of VA scientists who constantly strive to improve the quality of delivery of care to our Veterans. It is a 2-year paid full-time position under the VA Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA).
