Note:
Current format for the Summer Learning Academy is face-to-face; however, we will be prepared to pivot to accommodate remote instruction as needed per VCU COVID-19 guidelines.

NEW:
There is now a 50% COST REDUCTION for each session in the Summer Learning Academy due to the change to an online format and in respect of the current financial impact COVID-19 is having on our educators.

Registration:
Registration is open all summer. Virtual seating is limited and assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, so register early via this Google Form.

Sessions:
All sessions take place Monday - Friday in an online format. Each session is uniquely designed by the facilitator(s) to balance face-to-face (Zoom) instruction, collaboration and independent work.

Cost: 50% REDUCTION from $500 to $250
Each session costs $250; You will be required to submit a non-refundable $50 deposit for each session you register for via this Google form. The remaining $200 payment for each session is due the Friday before the week of the session(s) you register for. An email confirming your registration with a link to pay your remaining $200 will be sent to you prior to the week of your session(s). If you do not pay your remaining $200 balance for the session(s) you register for by the Friday before your session(s) begins, you will be withdrawn from the session and will not be refunded your $50 deposit.

Certificate:
Participants earn a certificate of 40 hours of professional learning for each session they complete that can be submitted for recertification points per your school district's discretion.

Introduction to Restorative Justice for Education (June 22-26) Facilitators: Renowned legal reform and social justice advocate, Sylvia Clute, who designed and implemented a successful restorative justice program for Richmond City Schools and Tami Sober, PhD, Assistant Professor, VCU School of Education and RTR Alumni Coordinator. Introduction to Restorative Justice in Education is a five-day course that explores how Restorative Justice may be implemented in schools and classrooms as a system that fosters positive behavior, strengthens community, and addresses issues of disconnection, racism and the school-to-prison pipeline. Teachers, staff and administrators learn practical ways to create a supportive school culture. It includes training in using Restorative Classroom Circles and restorative interventions to create a safe, stimulating and welcoming learning environment.

Healthy, Active Schools and Students = a Recipe for Success! (June 22-26) Facilitator: Misti Mueller. During Healthy, Active Schools and Students = a Recipe for Success! teachers will develop a concrete understanding for the importance of infusing movement opportunities throughout the day for themselves and their students. Creating a school culture of wellness is dependent on the support of administration, staff, teachers, and families. Strategies for gaining that support will be discussed. Teachers will first explore the connection between the brain, learning, and movement along with the many other mental and physical benefits associated with having an active classroom. Second, sample active lessons for math, science, language arts, and social studies will be shared an teachers will work to develop their own active lessons throughout the week. Introduction to Urban Literacy (June 22-26) Facilitator: Kathryn Starke, Introduction to Urban Literacy Education course reinforces that every teacher is a reading teacher. It offers an introduction to urban literacy education that supports elementary school classroom teachers, reading teachers/coaches, and educators dedicated to creating a classroom and school that promotes literacy. This session specifically touches on the background knowledge and motivation in addition to best practices in literacy to meet every child on his or her reading journey.

Developing + & - Basic Facts in the 1st - 3rd Grades (June 29-July 3) Facilitator: Laura Domalik. Developing + & - Basic Facts in the 1st - 3rd Grades invites you to take a closer look at the addition and subtraction facts that we want children to be fluent in when they get to third grade. We will work together to break these down, make sense of them and how students might develop fluency with them through games and activities. WE will work as a group to develop a shared resource where we can store these great activities and ideas!

Mindfulness & Movement (June 29-July 3) Facilitator: Ashley Williams. Mindfulness & Movement is the practice of being present and fully living in the moment. A self-care routine is a daily journey of intentional living and being mindful about your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Educators will be introduced to a variety of mindful-based interventions and strategies to support their own personal well-being to be used for self regulation, stress management and social emotional learning in everyday life. Optional: Mindful-based strategies and interventions to integrate into the student-teacher relationship and classroom to improve stress management, self regulation and classroom operation will be introduced. Strategies will include breathing practices, sensory awareness and conscious communication techniques. Educators will understand how to apply the practices within their classroom.

Teaching English Language Learners (July 6-10) Facilitators: Carol Waters & Virginia Palencia. Teaching English Language Learners begins with a discussion of social-cultural and policy contexts, as well as ESL delivery models. Then, educators will explore strategies for developing reading, writing, listening and speaking skills for English Learners (EL) students. In addition, the course will examine teaching ELs in content areas, comprehensible input and developing background.

K-2 Number Talks and Math Tasks (July 6-10) Facilitator: Laura Domalik. Do you want to engage with your young mathematicians and get them to share their thinking? Let's spend some time in the K-2 Number Talks & Math Tasks session working on developing number talks for young learners. We will also work on learning about and creating math tasks for various content strands and practice unpacking the learning from these activities. Click here to sign up for this session.

Communication & Cognition: Tools, Tricks, & Trustworthy Evidence for Instruction (July 13-17) Facilitator: Reed Senter. Communication & Cognition: Tools, Tricks and Trustworthy Evidence for Enhancing Classroom Instruction will provide teachers (K-12) with the information necessary to implement broad measures to support language development and executive functions for all students in their classroom. Further, teachers will be able to identify specific areas of weakness in students' communication and cognition, and will be able to provide evidence-based supports for the students who need them. Finally, teachers will be equipped with strategies to make the most out of collaboration with speech-language pathologists.

Racial Identity Development: Pathways Toward Transformative Pedagogy (July 13-17) Facilitator: Rachel Gomez. When discussions arise around race and culture in education, oftentimes youth/people of color are the subject— or even the “issue”. Lacking is the acknowledgement of white racial identity. Racial Identify Development: Pathways Toward Transformative Pedagogy will workshop critical self reflection & racial identity development with K-12 professionals as foundational preparation for culturally relevant pedagogy in the classroom.

Blending Instruction with Technology (July 27-31) Facilitators: Jessica Bowden and Heather Causey M.Ed., ITRT and Online Learning Developers. Blending Instruction with Technology will help students to make effective choices for the use of technology and support content-based instruction blended with appropriate technology. Participants will: gain hands-on practice using 10 technological tools that offer documentation and data to drive instruction, Learn how to break away from whole-group instruction, replacing it with mini-lessons, independent work and/or digital content that is centered around creativity, collaboration and communication, Empower educators to use available online resources to improve student engagement and achievement (Open education resources-OER focus), Walk-away with at least one blended lesson ready to use in the new school year.

Co-Planning and Co-Teaching (August 3-7) Facilitators: Erin Willis, Special Education teacher and Christal Corey, science teacher, both RTR Alumni at Boushall Middle. Co-Planning and Co-Teaching is designed for co-teaching pairs to get hands on experience with team building, co-planning, co-teaching, and effective communication. You will learn models of collaboration, best practices for all types of co-teaching pairs, and gain experience working within the Universal Design for Learning framework. Please note: even though the workshop is designed for co-teaching pairs, it is not required that both members of the pair attend.

Elevating and Engaging Black Girls in Schools (August 3-7) Facilitator: Danielle Apugo. Elevating and Engaging Black Girls in Schools provides a week-long survey examining how educators and other stakeholders can co-construct affirmative learning environments for Black girls in Schools.

Self-Care & Mindfulness: Strategies for Cultivating a Conscious Classroom (August 10-14) Facilitator: Keonna Knight. Self-Care & Mindfulness: Strategies for Cultivating a Conscious Classroom/Community provides educators with space to connect to their self-care needs, dig deep into their current practices, learn and practice mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques, and explore ways to integrate mindfulness and self-care into their classrooms/communities. Through experiential learning, self-reflection, and mindful dialogue, educators will discover how to take genuine care of themselves to show up more fully for themselves and their communities. Educators will leave the session with tools and strategies for practicing genuine self-care and incorporating mindfulness practices in their classroom community.

Trauma & Resilience: Strategies for Holistic Wellness (August 10-14) Facilitator: Abigail Conley. Trauma & Resilience: Strategies for Holistic Wellness explores cultivating holistic wellness, both within the individual and with the communities they serve. The focus will be on exploring stress, resilience, and empowerment through a trauma-informed approach to integrating the various domains of holistic wellness.
