On Sunday May 26, we welcomed Paul and Grace Mbithi to St. B's. The Mbithis are the founders of one of our long-term mission partners, New Life Restoration Ministries, in Nairobi, Kenya. NLRM provides a home for over 100 orphaned and vulnerable children and educates them and many other children from the poorest parts of the Kibera neighborhood. Check out this video of the children from this spring!

WHAT IS COMING UP THIS WEEK?
|
|
|
There are three wonderful opportunities this week to show your love in action for all God's children and God's creation!
First, on Wednesday, June 19, also known as Juneteenth, St. B’s Justice Ministries will host a local group at the rectory and around our walking path, as the group raises money to further the training of Black mental health care counselors. Register here to join the fundraising walk. Meet behind St. B’s Rectory at 8:30 am for coffee and donuts and hear about this project from Nashville-based Black Mental Health Counselor Reparations Foundation before walking our path.
Second, on Thursday, June 20, our mission partner, The Village of Glencliff, is hosting an open house from 9 - 11 a.m. to thank its donors, volunteers, partners, and graduates (the brief program starts at 9:45 a.m.). The Village of Glencliff is a medical respite program that provides people experiencing homelessness with a hospitable place for recovery after a hospitalization. The New York Times ran an interesting story about this issue here.
Finally, on Saturday, June 21, the Cumberland River Compact hosts its live-music fundraiser, Hellbender on the River, from 6 - 9 p.m. The CRC provided St. B's with over 50 trees for our campus in 2023!

St. B's supports Charis in its mission to deliver food every week of the year to clients in all sorts of situations. For over 20 years, Charis has served people who cannot pick up the food that other agencies and non-profits offer them. Even the briefest interaction with the recipient of the food is life-giving for all involved. Charis has regular volunteer opportunities and would love for more volunteers!

Over 40% of Tennessee families with children say they are food insecure; 70% have changed spending on food in the last two years. Of the group changing their spending habits, 38% of Black parents versus 24% of white parents reported skipping a meal. In the summer, this food insecurity for children is worse. This summer, Tennessee is participating in an new Federal program called SUN Bucks, which is a grocery benefit available across most of the United States. Families with eligible school-aged children can get $120 per child to buy groceries during the summer.

Today is World Refugee Day, when refugee organizations across the U.S. honor the strength and courage of refugees and encouraging public awareness and support for refugees. Read 8 Things to Know about Refugees by World Relief. Consider also these three books, which are very accessible and enlightening: After the Last Border, Everything Sad is Untrue, and When Stars are Scattered.
