Marilyn Filter, PhD, RN, CNM

Associate Professor

Marilyn S. Filter holds a doctorate in Human Development and Family Studies from Michigan State University. She is a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) having earned her MS from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. She has a BA in Elementary Education and Music History from the University of Michigan-Dearborn and earned her ADN from Schoolcraft College.

Dr. Filter has over 20 years experience as a CNM both in private practice and a clinic for underserved women in Saginaw County. She current clinic is in Saginaw at CMU Medical Education Partners where she is working to initiate Centering Pregnancy to improve infant and maternal mortality rates and reduce disparities.

TEACHING

Dr. Filter has been teaching at the University of Michigan-Flint since 2006. She has taught women's health at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. She currently teaches research to graduate students in the MSN and DNP programs. Her expertise in translational research has helped many students understand the research required by AACN and NONPF essentials for graduate nursing education.

RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP

Marilyn S. Filter has done research in the areas of women's health using photovoice methodology, quantitative and quality methods. She has also done research in improving online education at the graduate level. Her current research is the creation of a model for translational research: the Filter TRIP Model.

SERVICE

Dr. Filter works with underserved women to improve health outcomes and reduce disparities. She has championed Centering Pregnancy and is working with community leaders to initiate group prenatal care in Saginaw County.

She also works in the Saginaw Children's Zoo vegetable garden to improve nutrition for children.
