Set to star alongside Yifei are famous actor and martial arts master Jet Li, Rogue One's Donnie Yen, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon's Jason Scott Lee, The Meg's Yoson An, as well as Utkarsh Ambudkar, Ron Yuan, Tzi Ma, Rosalind Chao and Cheng Pei-Pei.
Mulan is being directed by Niki Caro and its screenplay was written by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek. Jason T. Reed, Chris Bender and Jake Weiner are set as producers, and Barrie M. Osborne, Bill Kong and Tim Coddington are serving as executive producers.Mulan was originally set to release later this year, but was pushed back by nearly a year-and-a-half. Last year, Liu Yifei was cast as Hua Mulan and Niki Caro was attached to direct the film a year prior.
Though the plot of the movie seems to follow the animated film closely, it was previously reported that the movie will not be a musical. However, last year, Disney president of production Sean Bailey said the film is “not currently intended to be” a musical, but also noted that “nothing is off the table.” Director Niki Caro herself said the film will incorporate music, though didn't specify if the film would be an outright musical.
