Dear Campus Community, 

We are pleased to share with you that the PSU Board of Trustees voted unanimously this morning to appoint Dr. Ann E. Cudd as Portland State University’s 11th President. 

Throughout the search process, Dr. Cudd stood out to the Board for her deep commitment to academic and research excellence, community engagement, the vital importance of racial equity, and the powerful role that an urban-serving university can play in our region and in a renaissance for Portland. She shares Portland State’s values of student success and the ways in which a PSU degree can change lives for the better. We are highly confident that Dr. Cudd is the right leader to take Portland State into the future and continue our mission to Let Knowledge Serve the City. 

We are deeply grateful to the PSU community for your participation in the presidential search process. Hundreds of you attended the campus forums with the finalists and provided valuable feedback to the Board of Trustees. Your engagement and input was key to our being able to conclude a successful search. 

Dr. Cudd will join PSU officially on August 1st after she closes out her current role as Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor at the University of Pittsburgh and relocates to Portland. She succeeds PSU President Stephen Percy who announced his retirement last year. Prior to her full-time appointment Dr. Cudd will be making several visits to Portland and I know she has a great interest in meeting as many of you as possible. Please join us in welcoming her to PSU and to Portland.

I am reaching out to you to let you know that Candidate A is withdrawing from the presidential search. As Presidential Search Advisory Committee Chair and Board Vice Chair, I have every confidence in the finalist candidates that we have invited to campus and we look forward to visits from Candidates B and C which are moving forward as planned. 

All meetings planned for Candidate A, including the campus forum on Tuesday, Feb. 7, have been cancelled. 

I look forward to seeing you all on campus over the next two weeks as we welcome Finalist B and C to campus for their visits.

Campus Wide Update 

Dear Campus Community, 

I am pleased to share the on-campus visits for three finalist candidates in the search for PSU’s 11th president.

PSU's next president will take the helm of Oregon's only urban research university at a critical time in our history and will be tasked with leading PSU into a future of excellence and success for students, faculty, and staff.

Three finalist candidates will visit campus in February. Each candidate will be on campus for two days and will have roughly 20 meetings with faculty, staff, students, and community leaders. The Board of Trustees would like to encourage the campus community to attend the campus forums as an opportunity to learn more about each candidate and ask questions. The participation, engagement and feedback from the campus community will be critical for the Board of Trustees as we evaluate each of the finalists during the decision-making process.

The CV, cover letter, and feedback survey for each finalist will be posted to the Presidential Search web page located on the Board of Trustee Webpage 24 hours prior to their individual campus interviews. All feedback surveys will be available through Friday, February 17, 2023.

At the campus forums, each finalist will make a brief presentation regarding their interest in PSU, which will be followed by an open question and answer period. 
All forums will be held at the Smith Memorial Student Union Ballroom.

Campus Wide Update 

Dear Campus Community, 

I am pleased to share that the search for Portland State University’s 11th president is moving along in accordance with our planned timeline. Our consultants at AGB Search continue to be excellent resources to the committee as we pursue the best candidates to lead this great university into the future. 

The 16-member Presidential Search Advisory Committee has met regularly and completed a comprehensive bias training. We are actively reviewing candidates. 

As we work to identify finalist candidates through our presidential search process, we are creating four time slots in anticipation of finalists coming to campus in early February. Each finalist will have meetings with various campus partners over two days, including a brief presentation and open Q&A session with the campus community during their campus visit. 

In the interest of navigating everyone's calendars, we felt it prudent to move forward to place holds for anticipated meetings. Each finalist will have roughly 20 meetings in their two-day campus visit, so there is much to coordinate!

At this time we do not know how many finalists will be invited for on-campus interviews but in an effort to make sure our community will be able to attend finalist sessions, we wanted to share these tentative dates with you. If you are interested in attending the campus forums with yet-to-be-determined finalists, please hold the times listed below:

  • Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2023 from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.
  • Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023 from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023 from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.
  • Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023 from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.

We will let you know how many finalists will be coming to campus in the first few days of February. Launch of the Presidential Search Profile

AGB Search was on campus the week of October 3rd - 6th and met with over 30 stakeholders and 200 campus/community members to gather feedback for the Presidential Profile. Following these sessions, AGB Search worked with the Presidential Search Advisory Committee to finalize the details of the profile.

Today, the Search Advisory Committee and AGB Search are pleased to officially launch the search process and the Presidential Profile.

Campus Wide Listening Sessions the Week of October 3rd - October 6th

AGB Search will be on campus the week of October 3rd - October 6th to gather campus and community feedback for the Presidential Profile. The profile gives a snapshot of Portland State University, the opportunities and challenges and the campus atmosphere.

The search for Portland State’s next president is advancing. The Chair of the PSU Board of Trustees has appointed a diverse and passionate Presidential Search Advisory Committee that will lead the process, along with partner firm, AGB Search, which was selected in June. The Search Advisory Committee will undergo training in the coming weeks and begin regular meetings during the academic year. Listening Sessions with the campus community will take place on campus the week of October 3, 2022. Search Chair Berry is enthusiastic to announce that AGB Search has been identified as the firm that will partner with PSU during the upcoming presidential search. Not only is AGB the expert in our board governance, but AGB Search also has extensive successful experience placing high-level executives at public institutions. Currently, we are in the initial stages of coordinating with AGB Search and hope to have some training sessions for the search advisory committee over the summer, with an official launch of the committee in September.

June 6, 2022

Benjamin Berry, Co-Vice Chair of the Board was named as Chair of the Presidential Search Committee and initial committee invitations have been issued by PSU Board Chair Greg Hinckley. Campus listening sessions regarding the search will be scheduled this fall. [Update made in June 6, 2022 Currently] 

May 17, 2022

On May 16, 2022, the PSU Board of Trustees voted on the resolution [resolution linked here] to initiate a search for the next President of Portland State University. Board Chair Greg Hinckley shared a message with the campus community on May 17, 2022, sharing his gratitude to President Percy for his dedication during this unprecedented time as President and the Board's commitment to "a fully transparent presidential hiring process. On May 13, 2022, PSU President Stephen Percy shared with the campus community his intentions to retire at the end of his contract in June 2023. President Percy, during his last year as the 10th President of PSU, will continue to support the priorities of "racial justice and equity, student success, and engagement to advance revitalization of our community and region."  [Full Message from President Percy]
